I know this sounds basic but I total all my directs debits & stuff together & take it off my monthly income.
I usually have £140 left or £5 a day. I try to keep under the £5 but I know if I go over I am already overspending.

    Early warning system.

It also helps when you are trying to save for something as anything left over at the end of the day goes straight in the pot, you can see it grow daily.

Mmmm daily spend and pot the rest, start new the next day. Yes i see the logic in that, it keeps you to £5 a day and in the habit of just having a small amount on a daily basis. I am open to all idea's no matter how basic you may think they are. i need all the help i can get.

    thankyou

  • OK 1st of dec and a new start for me. I'm al fired up and raring to get started, all your positive comments and support are spuring me on. lots of issues to tackle on the way. Debts and arrears and such. I will post as they arise and deal with them.

I cant thank you all enough for being there for me.

Todays jobs. Sort out my christmas cards and wrapping paper for presents. I would usualy just go and buy new, then find out I have lots from the year before. Done two hours overtime at work this morning too. Think i can get away with about a £3 spent today. I have looked for the daily spend challenge but cant find it, i'll keep looking.

Contacting my daughter today for help until next Friday, when i get paid. Dreading it but it has to be done.

    thankyou for reading

I'm a Starbucks (or caffe nero) addict too. Two tips:

    1. Get nice coffee to have at home. Starbucks (or Whittard of Chelsea) sell the syrups so that you can make your own flavoured latte. Get a cheap percolator (I asked for an espresso machine as an xmas present), and voila, SB at home!

    2. Get a Starbucks card (and register it so you get discounts in store). Put an amount on it each month and when it's gone it's gone. Then you can gradually reduce the amount each month.

Plus, if you're cutting down on the shopping then you wont be in town to be tempted by it anymore!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

What brilliant advice Ames :T Also, I think you appreciate these things more when it's an occasional treat rather than a regular thing.

Good luck with today's tasks Bloojeans.

  • Hiya Ames, thanks for those tips. After you telling me about credit union. I searched for one near me. There is a branch in my town centre and a local pay in point just 15 mins from me at my local shopping centre. It is actual at the council office where i pay my rent. So plan on puting something in, every week when i pay my rent. How fab is that. So next time I am in town i am going in to open an account. I have to open it with £4. £3 of this is for admin to open it and £1 to go into the account. Thankyou for that information.

Really agree about how a Starbucks coffee habit can add up over the year. We still go and get a latte & cake when we're out, we just no longer do it every single time we set foot into town. Another worthwhile moneysaver for us was taking packed lunches to work. I never thought I'd stick to it, but I really have. We worked out that we were spending about £2,000 a year between us on popping into M&S for a sandwich, yoghurt, crisps, drink, etc, every day and on top of that, of course, you've left work & gone round the shops so temptation would generally beckon in the form of a couple of magazines too. I still love magazines but I find that my Mum or sister usually buy a lot of the ones I want to read & pass them on to me anyway and there's also a stall on the market which sells 3 out of date ones (often only the previous month) for £2.50, rather than the between £10 and £13 I would have paid. Once you get going with this (I used to be a terrible money fritterer which is why the orginal post by Bloojeans struck such a chord with me), you find it's not just about denying yourself all treats, it's just about keeping it within what you earn. However happy I used to THINK a good old therapeutic session of money spending made me, I wasn't happy once the bank statement arrived and I'd only barely be able to cover my mortgage & have nothing left for bills without yet another month of unofficial overdraft. Being in control is making me happier than all those carrierbagfuls of tat ever did!
