  • Hi :hello: I've an idea for you - why not set yourself a weekly budget say 50 pounds (or whatever), put a nice pitcure of a shiny new laptop (or whatever you want) in your wallet and then when you pull your wallet out you will see shiny new laptop and will think twice about whether to buy this item or that item if it stops you getting your laptop. At the end of the week or month or 4 weeks transfer any spare spending money into your shiny new laptop account (or whatever you want to call it).
    Perhaps this would help you?

  • Hi Bloojeans,

You may well have to talk to your daughter (or DH) about getting through this month, but why not show them this thread so they can see you are taking steps towards it being the last time?

The idea about the 'shiny laptop account' is really useful - I used it several times (but mine was a shiny plane ticket). I know being disciplined is a pain the bum sometimes, but it helped me feel like I was taking control, instead of reacting to stress by spending. Small things, but a nice feeling.

Just a thought but the 'one more thing I won't bother dusting' helped me stop buying pretties for the home and 'can't be bothered to take that to the dry cleaners' helped with the clothes.

    Well done on the mini-spend!

    Good luck x

Well done on opening the bank accounts, I think you'll find that a lot of us on here have complicated banking systems that no-one else can understand, but if it works that's the main thing!

    Good luck with it all.

As for needing the money, do you have anything to car boot? Some are open all year round. If there aren't any near you there's ebay, but you wont get the money for a week or two.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Thankyou Ames, I have a loft full of "junk" might just sort through that, it will give me something to do and keep me away from the shops. I live on the north-east of England any idea how much a stall rent is ?

Im excited about my banking, cant wait to get some money in, to start doing it.

    Thankyou for reading

  • Bargain Betty, Thanks for your input. it will be my daughter that helps me. DH is worse than me. Thats why i do it. I talk to him about it and he knows 90% of the issues but he still leaves it up to me. Think that should change even if he takes over the car finances ( car not financed) but the running costs of it. Good idea about showing daughter my thread. Just thought i might ask her to log in as me and read it !!!!!!!!

If you search car boot directory there's a site that shows all the info for local car boots, or there's a thread on the ebay board here, some people are from the north east and know the sales up there.

SO, you want a laptop? That's GREAT! Something to aim for!

I don't know if this helps, but I used to spend a lot of money on probiotic yogurt. At around 1.30 for 500mls it mounts up. So I started making my own - now it costs me about 60p a litre and is much much nicer. But here's the thing - everytime I make some yogurt I 'pay' myself £1. It sits in a jar by the fridge - I need 78 jars of yog to pay for my plane ticket to Turkey in February :-)

It doesn;t have to be yogurt - what about home made soup? what other convenience food do you buy which would be much cheaper to make and help you save towards your laptop? It will also keep you busy, give you a focus and help you to put cheap wholesome food on the table. Win-win :D

I know this sounds basic but I total all my directs debits & stuff together & take it off my monthly income.
I usually have £140 left or £5 a day. I try to keep under the £5 but I know if I go over I am already overspending.

    Early warning system.

It also helps when you are trying to save for something as anything left over at the end of the day goes straight in the pot, you can see it grow daily.
