The Government is to blame for all this.

They perscuted smokers as much as possible, treating them like lepers, and now they are doing the same with drinkers - they then wonder why people go on 'booze cruises' and the likes to buy their stuff aboraod - it is cheaper, and you do not get some Nazi treating you like a criminal.

The best thing you can do, is whenever you can, but your stuff aborad, if fireidns go on holiday, get them to bring some back for you.

When the Government finds out how much tax they lose, they will soon have a panic.

I had similar happen in Tesco.

My then 12 year old had gone to look at the magazines while I was at the checkout. I had a few bags of groceries and a decent bottle of wine. He came back just after I'd paid and the checkout lady asked if he was with me. I said yes he's my son, and she said she shouldn't have sold the wine to me as I was with a minor.

Fair enough if I was buying alcopops, but how many parents buy expensive wine for their children
Here I go again on my own....

I put it down to the genes, my mum has always looked young for her age - the wrinkles are beginning to appear now but hey that's acceptable as long as my teeth don't fall out !

I have worked for iceland and somerefeilds. few years ago iceland brought in challange 21 nd had bog training drive as many were caught.

Somerfeilds brought i challage 25 and went training mad due to trading standards traps of sending youngsters in and testing ids ect.

I do think common sense has to come in to it.

I have seen 2people in asda and sainsbury latly who clearly look older than 25/18 been asked. once challanged and they have no id they wont serve you.
Luckily my 3year old hasent aroused conspiracy to buy booze yet when I buy a nice wine.

Did make me chuckle vision of manager chasing someone down wine ailse!
Guess not funny if it was you. Bet other customers thourght manager was the nutty one.

  • I think it's mad the way they work it. I'm 21 and quite baby faced so if I'm buying alcohol or with OH buying it I always have my ID out and rarely get asked for it! Last week I was doing the weekly shop with OH brought couple of bottles of wine, the went through fine cashier didn't ask for ID from either of us (he's 29) but a packet of stepsils and she wanted ID from both of us!!!

Personally if I had my 14 year old with me, I would put the wine or other alcohol on first and if they refused to sell it to me, I would leave all my shopping for them to put back.

    Just me.
    me too...
in fact I shop at Morrisons and the other week I let my daughter key in the PIN for me (waits to get shot down in flames for THAT 'breach of security') and I had bought wine. I looked at the SA, she looked at me and then I said - maybe I should have keyed in the PIN since I bought wine...
But walked out with it no problem
Sainsburys near here just got clobbered by Trading Standards as a under age SA sold booze to under aged kids - think it was a £15K fine...

  • I too take my kids shopping with me, especially at this time of year if we are on the way back from school I might often pop in a bottle of spirits in the basket toward the Christmas stash I am making for parties etc.

My children are both under 10 so not really old enough to enjoy a nice wine :)

I can see their point if they have some spotty barely old enough "adult" buying it with a teenager in tow but when its obviously a parent, its ridiculous. Surely common sense will prevail.

I will definately put my booze at the front of the shopping and as you say if they wont allow me to buy it I shall leave the rest of the shopping for them to put back.

The thing that disgusts me the most about this is the fact that I was buying booze with a child/minor they have the right to assume I am going to give them alcohol !!
  • How are the shop assisstants supposed to 'know' that the youngster is son/daughter? Do you ever think about the amount of lies that are told to us regarding age restricted sales? I know most of them from smoking when i was under-age.

At the end of the day it is not just the store that can be fined but also the individual shop assisstant - worse case scenario they can be taken to court and fined up to £5000 and get a criminal record if they make a sale to someone underage.

Try to have some sympathy for the people who you are bashing and don't judge anyone until you have done their job.

Incidently; trading standards say that the only acceptable forms of id are passport, photo driving license or a photo id card with the pass mark on it - the store should have a poster displayed to this effect.
