Supermarkets (or any shop for that matter) don't have to sell anything to anybody.0 -

In Mr S a similar thing happened with my dad and sister. dad is 64 sis 26. asked for ID as sis apparently looked younger than 25 sis duely produced her driving licence. Dad had no ID so alcohol refused. apparently according to them it's the law!! if in a group when one peron looks under 25 then unless all produce ID then no alcohol is sold.
I'm 30 and was asked for ID in Mr S in Truro a couple of months ago when buying a couple of bottles of wine - Checkout assistant thought I looked about 22 - I could have kissed herDug out photo driving licence, paid for wine and left. However, my OH who is 29 was stood with me through the whole thing, and she never asked to see his...so looks like different stores are doing different things...there's a surprise!:D:rolleyes:

I think its down to a lack of training for till staff, and a lack of common sense on behalf of the managers.
Got it in one.
As another poster said earlier, if they were to refuse me the alcohol in my shopping then they would be putting the rest back too.0 -
Have to say, I worked as a supervisor on the checkouts at Sainsbury's last year, and they did go through phases where you had to ID **everybody**. As supervisors, we were also expected to back up the checkout staff, as in if they've already challenged someone, we can't just wave you through.
With regards to the OP, is it possible that in situations like that, the SA asked your daughter for ID (possibly because she'd been at an interview and looked closer to 18/19?) and didn't have any? I agree, common sense is needed, and I'd always use it where possible, but it does seem to be in limited supply these days "Organising a wedding is like colouring in at age 4. Personally if I had my 14 year old with me, I would put the wine or other alcohol on first and if they refused to sell it to me, I would leave all my shopping for them to put back.
Just me.
I saw this done by someone a few weeks ago at my local Sainsburys. The conveyor belt was full and almost overflowing. When the dad with his teenage son was refused for the four-pack of beer he was buying with his week's shopping. He just said "Stuff the lot of it" and walked away leaving staff having to clear the conveyor before the next customer was served.
I was laughing my socks off.0 -
I was in the Big 'A' with my OH and two kids (DD 12, DS 9) where we went through the self service till and my daughter was the one doing the scanning....few issues with her father not packing the bag on the scales quickly enough so the sales assistant had to 'key' our till a few times to unlock it and stop it telling us to 'put it in the bag'!!...DD then scanned the bottle of red wine, obviously it raised the question, is the buyer over 18, same assistant came over and again unlocked the till!!! OH completed the transaction and paid with his card but the bizarre thing is...my DS at 9 is 5'3" and my 12 year old DD is 5'5"..the same height as me and BOY does she look older!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (terrifies the life out of OH and I, thank God we have wonderful children!!) Possibly because we live in Scotland were alcoholism is a major problem they don't bad an eyelid or perhaps the assistant, who wasn't a young kid himself, used his common sense!!! It has made me far more conscious though of buying alcohol (actually, it's never for me, I don't drink!!) when our kids are with us as I would lose the plot!!June 2012 Clydesdale Loan=[STRIKE]£12620[/STRIKE]£1246.47- (only 5 payments left but just received £3955 back from it for PPI!!!)0

I have come to the conclusion that supermarkets dont actually WANT to sell alcohol or cigarettes or cutlery (on the grounds that a set contains knives - unless they think you can fatally injure someone with a spoon) or glues. they stock them because customers want them.....then they taunt us by refusing the sale on spurious grounds.0

Thanks. I`m feeling a bit down and that made me laugh.0

He asked my DD her age, she said 16, then he asked for ID which she obviously didn't have. The point being however that she wasn't buying the alcohol, her father who she was with was.
I have received a letter back from Sainsbury's - not from the Customer Services Director I hasten to add - and they have not addressed any of my questions such as will they deliver alcohol to my house if my children are in with me but have said they will speak to the store manager. Am guessing no Xmas shopping at Sainsbury's for me then if the kids are with me :rolleyes:0
