Thank you to all the posters to helped me earlier. I have now got Vista and it is absolutely brilliant. I am loving it. I also managed to install Microsoft Office Beta 2007 and that works a treat as well. So far so good. I have not had any trouble with Vista except when it could not identify my graphics card but other than that it chugs along quite nicely.

I've used nLite to get rid of lots of the crap that comes with Windows XP, I've got the original install down to around 700megs, then once I've installed firefox, thunderbird, VLC, Media Player Classic, Avast and Zone Alarm, as well as running msconfig to stop things loading at start up it runs helluva fast.

700mb?!? That's quite big. I've got mine down to 350mb (with visual effects etc all left in), and I've read of people getting nearer 200-250mb.

scoOter, if you want an OS where you never have to install anything what's wrong with Mandrake or FC4? You'll have every program under the sun that you'd ever need, and it will never likely be hacked!

At current, I always find, I need to install quite a few extras to get Linux how I want it. Simple things such as codecs for example, better media players. so it's not quite out of the box either.

Because I like windows. I like the bells and whistles that come with it... I like the fancy effects. I also like the fact that the new version is going more towards being a complete package something that no other version has been. Its not that I dont want to install anything its just I prefer it all being built in and not installing 3rd party software to meet a goal. This is still the point I am trying to make.. Why go to the bother of installing stuff if you can get it built in. The argument you picked up on was from the stability issue. If its built in then it should (in theory) be more stable than if I installed 9-10 different programs from different vendors. I am not against installing things but why would I need to if its all included?

Its the same old stuff over again. You have cut your XP install down to 700MB... Why?.. Because it was full of crap?? why dont you use one of the cut down Linux Distros for your comp??. Personally if thats what you want to do then thats up to you.. It obviously works for you and I commend you on taking the time to find a solution for your needs. This is what I have done.. Vista Beta2 fits my needs right now, XP was lacking some things and I consider having to install and pay for 3rd party software as a waste of money and system hogging when I can now get it free. But for people to come on and use the old "Its Beta your going to doom us all" argument is just nonsense. I now have, Like you, a system I consider fit for my needs. There is no other motive for it. I am not ramming opinions down peoples throats or giving them horror stories I am only giving my views and answering questions. It just so happens that the people asking those questions have already made thier minds up about something they have never used.

I run Windows Vista Beta 2 for my every day needs. I have now made it a dual boot with XP because I am participating in a Beta test. I still need to run Vista to get my secure wireless connection as XP wont do this.

Please could we stop dwelling on what Im doing... I foolishly replied to people who I thought wanted to learn about Vista and help other users. I am finished defending my position with this. If anyone has any Vista related queries I will try to help but Please dont contunue with the "Your silly" or "why not try this" or "It will all end in tears" posts. This is a techie board for techie questions..

It should be fine... The product key you will get can be used on up to 10 computers... I actually think this is the same as office and its all the one activation key for everyone.(easier for microsoft to blacklist)

The adapter is on the list of supported devices. The drivers are built in. Can you see the adapter in Vista network connections?

:j installed vista as a clean installation and it only took 45 minutes to load on, everything is compatible apart from my netgear w111 it will only load half the disk on then says, its not digitally signed and thats as far as I get as it's not bringing up the wizard so I can get on line with it, so this is the 64bit version, which when you try to load on a 32bit machine wont let you, but I've loaded on my 64bit machine yet it says it's 32bit, ???? anyway going to try a few more ideas tomorrow and I'll let you know if I get it online or whether I wipe it and re-install xp then upgrade to vista taking the 2 hour route, also you can register on ms at the technet site for free and download vista on a 2mb connection this takes 4-5 hours and the best time to download it in the uk is after midnight, you can also download it twice and get 2 product keys, it downloads in an ISO file, you can order it off ms for £12.90p mastercard/visa and you can also put it on up to 10 pc's, if you order it you get the two versions which are 32bit at 3.13gbs and the 64bit at 4.02gbs whats the difference I hear you ask, well so far I don't know as I'm running them both on 2 pc's and I can't tell the difference, even though one is bigger than the other.
