Oh my god what a way of thinking. Movieman A new OS that need no 3rd party software will always be more stable than one that does. How many threads are here for free anti virus/firwall/video editing stuff. You came on here wanting to know what was different and changed from XP. I told you and you still try to slag everything off. DONT BUY IT if you like XP.. you will be left behind when support stops just like 95/98/ME users are. Personally if I could buy an Operating system for £200 that would let me play the same games as an XBOX 360 that costs around £300 then I have made a saving. If it includes all security/anti virus/ spyware and utilities I use then this is a saving of around another £100 or more not including subscription charges for updates. In my eyes if I spend my money on VISTA I will SAVE money. The point I was trying to get across. If you dont want it then dont buy it. I think a system where all installed Utilities are from the same company has a better chance of being more stable than one that isnt. As Pizzaboy stated this time next year most people will be upgrading and we will see how long other XP fanatics stay put. As for windows not having active X it does you just get warned for EVERY applet it tries to install so no more installing unknown content.

I am only trying to answer a question you put and you try to ridicule everything that I say.

This is a discussion forum.. Try to have something a bit more constructive than "It works on XP. We need a new operating system to do this because?". The because is that Filling up your harddrive with other programs can lead to systems slowing down and crashing. Microsoft will stop support for XP in the coming years and then where will you be. With your way of thinking then Why would we need 64 bit chips or SATA drives or 3GIG of memory or DVD drives when XP can happily work without them??? Dont say because of games then the argument you could put is ... Well is it enough of a change from all the other games I have to buy it?? I already have Unreal tourney .. why would I need another one???... Maybe because it looks better and is different??

Dont ask questions if you dont want to hear answers.

I try and give unbiased views and advice. The same as when people come on and slag of others for trying this or using it as a main system when they have no experience in the system itself. If I and others want to use it as our main and backup system then thats up to us, these comments do not help anybody except to start topics going in the wrong direction.

No you don't. For example I stated the perfectly reasonable view that anyone using Vista on their main system was asking for trouble which you questioned. (For the record, I'm an IT manager so I'm fairly au fait with this sort of thing)

My view is also Microsoft's view as well if you can be bothered to wade through their EULA for Vista.

It's a beta release; i.e it's been fairly well tested internally and by selected external guinea pigs but not comprehensively enough for public release otherwise Microsoft would have released it by now.

The reason it's been publicly released is to get free feedback and problem reporting after the fiasco that was the release of XP (trumpeted as "the most reliable operating system ever" and yet within 6 weeks of release there were already 90+ "updates" i.e bugfixes released).

If you're an experienced beta-tester and are confident enough to sort out any problems it throws up then good for you; the overwhelming majority of the sheeple downloading Vista will be in deep !!!!!! the moment it falls over. And if they're daft enough to be using it as their main system then that will involve data loss ("oh where's my five years of University work gone?").

That's what you need to remember

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.

I'd say Vista is more than just a "mere cosmetic change". It's been built up from the ground up.

For starters user accounts (UAC) are handled in a very different way, more along the lines of Linux. This is a huge security improvement. It's not something you can conveniently setup in XP as the system isn't designed to work that way. This for me is the most significant change.

    Other things include:
    - improved prefetching for faster booting/shutting down/loading of files.
    - windows services are locked down from changing key files/registry entries.
    - search as you type functionality, improved faster searching, better indexing of files.
    - virtual folders.
    - 64-bit option of Vista (I know XP has the same, but most people are on a 32-bit version).
    - Support for dual core, although I don't think all versions of Vista support this.

And then the nice to have addons:
    - alt-tabbing and finally windows tab (a la OSX).
    - program explorer (easier way to see what's installed/running on your machine).
    - aero interface (much for usable, quicker to find what you want).
    - two way firewall (protect in and outbound attacks)
    - IE7, Windows Mail (a much needed upgrade to Outlook Express), Windows Defender (for inbuilt spyware protection).

Some of the above can be achieved with 3rd party software (some free, some not). Personally though I'd rather it were all inbuilt, otherwise it's just more complexity and time needed to set up everything correctly.

(For the record, I'm an IT manager

    Thats the main problem ;):D

But ME holds the record ;)

Lets not forget to backup eh

That's what you need to remember

I will say MS would have to pay me loads to beta test anything, I mean its really unpaid work afterall, and its ok to run on a main PC if you do regular backing up, if people donnt backup thats there problem as I have explained on to many occasions why its important to backup to count.

Why is this not unbiased???? Is it because I had the cheek to question an IT manager?? I said I use it as a main system and didnt see any problem with it. I did not say you are talking rubbish and everyone should use it so it looks like you misread my post. I was just stating that I think the system was stable enough for me and had better support for my hardware and is a better choice FOR ME no one else ME.. That is unbiased. I DID NOT SAY THIS SHOULD BE USED BY EVERYONE AS A MAIN SYSTEM
And if they're daft enough to be using it as their main system then that will involve data loss ("oh where's my five years of University work gone?").

Ever heard of backup???? like I stated in my other posts I do this at the end of every day. You are the one being biased by resorting to name calling of people who have this as thier main system. If you are an IT professional then you of all people should have an open mind to these things and if I want to use it as my main then thats up to me I have not once said people should use this as a main. I havent even told people to try it (except for those that have ridiculed it without seeing it). You are the one giving a biased opinion that it is unstable and will crash and people are daft for using it.

:j I have downloaded both the 32bit and 64bit, the 32bit is on one pc the only thing I had to go looking for was the nvidia drivers which you can get from nvidia, in beta form, everything is working great, well worth the wait for it to come out, I got mine from MS technet site, took 5 hours for the 32bit 3.12gb ISO file to download, took 2 hours to upgrade on to the pc over XP, but once its running it is fantastic, can't wait to put the 64bit on the other pc, 64bit took 5+ hours to download, is 4.2gbs and I'll let you know how long it takes to put on as this is a 32bit pc and the other is a 64bit pc, if you decide to take vista off a pc I would reccommend that you clear the CMOS on the motherboard before you try putting XP back on, this will give your machine a better installation, and I'm going to go for a clean installation on the 64bit as I built that pc with vista in mind, so I'll let you all know how it goes, T
