Why on earth does it need to use 3D graphics just to lure average users into buying it?!
I wouldnt call getting XBOX live and XBOX 360 Game support as a waste of rescources. Or having inbuilt HDD recording support or HD support, what about Blu ray?? That is still a possibility. The 3D graphics are there for people who spend hundreds of pounds on thier graphics card so they can get more use out of it than just playing game.
Average users wont just be buying it to get 3D graphics . Why would you fork out the money just for a nice interface you can get with any skinning tool. Would you prefer an operating system without any extras so you would have to buy seperate Firewall, spyware,Anti Virus, dvd/cd burning, movie editing, security. What about the fact you could restrict your child from playing any 18 rated games as well. Child accounts can be created so they cant do things you wouldnt want them too.
All of the above are some of the things that will be included in the final version and I dont see them being a waste of rescources.
Why not move to Linux... Isnt that what thats meant to be0 -

Are you claiming that Vista will run Xbox 360 games when the Xbox-360 has a completely different CPU and architecture? It may be true, but it's news to me.Or having inbuilt HDD recording support or HD support
Weird, I record, edit and play HDTV movies on XP.what about Blu ray??
What about Blu-Ray? It's just another ATA drive, why should we need a new operating system to use it?Would you prefer an operating system without any extras so you would have to buy seperate Firewall, spyware,Anti Virus, dvd/cd burning, movie editing, security.
I'd just like a secure operating system: Windows is insecure by design, precisely because of all the crud that Microsoft load it up with. I mean, letting web pages download and run executable programs in Internet Explorer... who came up with that one?All of the above are some of the things that will be included in the final version and I dont see them being a waste of rescources.
And absolutely zero of them make me want to upgrade. Where is the actual real benefit to Joe Sixpack of paying $100 for a new version of Windows?
When they were running Windows 3.1 and saw demos of Windows 95, upgrading was a no brainer. When XP came along it wasn't a real necessity, but it did provide real benefits. Why would someone running XP want to switch to Vista?0 -

XBOX 360 and Vista games will be released at the same time with cross platform support so you can buy it for the PC and play online against XBOX 360 users. The support for playing XBOX games direct on your PC has been discussed and may make it into the final edition but because of the new graphical improvements of DirectX10 this might not happen.

The downloading problem you mentioned no longer happens under Vista. You are warned of any changes made to system. You have an inbuilt system/file backup program that works and no need for installing 3rd party Software for doing everyday tasks.
Maybe because you wouldnt use any of the advanced features it just seems like a cosmetic upgrade to you and the average user, but to people who just want things to work without having to source the best value for money or best compatability it would be a better system.
Imagine getting your new Computer home at Christmas and being able to play your mate online with his new XBOX 360. Or watch HD movies or stream music from your XBOX 360. What about just being able to boot up and go online without having to install all sorts of spyware/security/antivirus software from different providers. Everything updating at the one time and no more having to pay for it.
Vista has a lot more to offer than XP but if you dont want it then dont buy it. Go read the Vista homepage and you will see how different it is. Just because you wont use most of the features doesnt mean no one will and I personally think it is a big step up from XP.
You originally asked if it was just a waste of resources and just a 3D interface. I just pointed out some of the advantages of Vista over XP. but I would recommend you dont buy it if you think it would be a waste of money and wouldnt benefit you.. I will personally be waiting until after Christmas and getting a new comp with Vista installed.0 -

And we need a new operating system to do this because? But do you have to use 3rd party software that could potentially screw your system??
It works on XP. We need a new operating system to do this because? Why do we need to buy new DVD players to play them???

So Vista has removed ActiveX? That's going to be amusing for all the web sites that rely on it.What about just being able to boot up and go online without having to install all sorts of spyware/security/antivirus software from different providers.
So let me get this right. Your argument seems to be 'XP is a buggy, insecure pile of junk, and we should all queue up to buy Vista because it won't be'.
Excuse me for being cynical, but wasn't that the same argument used for upgrading from Win98 to XP? How many times are we supposed to fall for people telling us that one generation of Microsoft's software is awful but the next will be wonderful?
And, if you want a computer that's secure and 'just works', why not forget Windows and buy a Mac instead?0 -
the way i see it is you can slag it all you want, but anyone in the know(and i dont mean me)will be using this, this time next year.whether you like it or not its a landmark release and well over due, buy the time everyone has finally upgraded, people will be looking for the next one which i believe is supposed to be out around 2010 called blackcomb i think0

Let's put this argument to rest. Vista is so far looking like a mere cosmetic change and everything it does can be done on XP or with the help of 3rd party software. MS has had a good look at Apple's OS and touched up its XP, looked at firefox and produced IE7, looked at the good spyware removal and antivirus freeware that is around and tried to improve its security package. All in all a failed strategy as there is nothing innovative at all and that is the buttom line. They finally decided to use the "open source" way of thinking and release a testing version for the public to do the testing for them with the difference that they'll eventually charge this public hunderds of pounds to buy the final version. I think it is a really good thing that they are trying to get feedback from us on their operating system to try and improve it but as others have mentioned it looks like it will end up being another ME.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0
