How many households do you know where ONLY one partner drives & its the woman, not many I'll bet.

Certainly some of the older generation of women did not learn to drive.

But when I think of couples that I know who are under 50, there are only three couples I can think of in which only one partner drives.

In all three cases, it is the man that doesn't drive.

Well I'm under 50 & I know plenty of couples where the woman doesn't drive or doesn't have a car & the man does.

    Does it matter anyway?

So long as people are happy with what they have chosen or not chosen to do?

If everyone drove themselves everywhere, your DH might be out of a job. And the roads would be gridlocked.

Horses (or cars) for courses. :D

I live in a rural area and i do need to drive... my oh or mil take me and my dd everywhere... i know i need to learn... but i am really scared. I used to live in a big city where never needed to learn to drive, now at 25 i just dont think i can cope with learning to drive... it is really scares me.

    I think it does matter.

Just as the average full time female wage is well below the average full time male wage.

Why is it still (in 2009) that most of the people on this thread who don't drive are women?
I can't help thinking that most of the women who don't learn to drive because the allow/expect their OH to drive them around are stuck in a time warp.
I don't want to have to rely on my OH every time I need to go somewhere.

I don't rely on OH to take me anywhere! I have legs and I use public transport. (Now trying to get OH to use HIS legs or public transport is a whole new ball game!:rotfl:)

No I'm hitting out at the assumption that men do drive & women can as an extra IYKWIM.

    I know of 1.

Public transport & walking is OK for you.

But you say he wouldn't do either.

    Why is that?

Thats the attitude I'm challenging & my DH would rather stay home than walk or get a bus.

Cos he's lazy! He even goes in the car to the shop and it's only a 3 min walk away :rotfl:

He doesn't like walking and doesn't like public transport. I tell him he would be fked if he ever lost his license or we didn't have a car.

I could walk for miles, even when we go shopping (say round Cheshire Oaks outlet or something) he moans about all the walking.

He works over all though and uses a works van, so is used to driving a lot.
