My aunty is having a tough time as my uncle wants her to learn to drive now that they have a small car and its no extra to insure her? Their car was always abit big in the past?
My aunty dosent want to she did try years ago but didnt pass and had several goes. She hasnt got the confidence now plus she said it would cost an arm and a leg to get through thats if she could?
Uncle is saying it would be good incase he cant drive anymore what will they do etc?
Does anyone here not drive and what are you reasons etc?
Like to hear stories from anyone about not driving are you bothered etc?

I don't drive because my vision is too poor to allow me to do so.
In one way it doesn't bother me - I save loads of money by not having a car. However, it would make going home much easier. (whether it'll be cheaper; I don't know?)Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I don't drive. I had some lessons at 17 and didn't get on with it. Then I had some more lessons at 20, passed my theory test, failed my practical first time, and was running out of money so didn't retake. A few weeks later I moved to London and have never needed a car. I very rarely wish I had one, either.
Wherever she lives, I don't really think there's any point in doing it if she doesn't want to. Your uncle's concerned about what will happen if and when he becomes unable to drive, but if your aunt passes her test now even though she doesn't really want to, chances are she won't end up doing any driving uin the near future anyway, and won't have the experience or confidence to be a safe and competent driver when such a time comes. If she wanted to do it for herself, I'd be saying go for itOperation Get in Shape

I didn't drive for a long time. Passed my test when I was 19 and then got a job in London, so didn't really need a car. Plus bf drove everywhere.
Now we live somewhere a bit more remote and me and bf aren't getting on and I hated relying on him to drive me everywhere.
Now I love having my little car, have only had it a week and already don't think I'll go back to not having it. It's just so handy.
But I think it depends on the person. I didn't want to drive for so long cos I was a nervous driver, but now that I want to be more independent, I'm just taking the bull by the horns. If the op aunty doesn't want to drive though, she won't have the confidence to do it and therefore will always be nervous.
I must admit, if I hadn't already got the licence from when I was younger, I probably would have carried on without a car now as the hassle to get one would put me off (not sure I would pass now!).Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

We have both passed our tests and drive occasionally (when we get put on someone else's insurance - parents mainly) BUT, we do not have a car of our own as we cannot afford one at the minute.
I would like a car though (particularly as it's cold and wet often now and I have a 3 year old to take out and about) but it's not realistic.
My nan was like your aunt, but she could drive - just didn't like doing it - so when my grandad (who drove) died, she got rid of the car and now goes on holiday instead! She gets the bus most places, but my mum (her daughter in law) drives her to the shop/hospital/anywhere she doesn't want to get the bus to.
I think it's an idea to advise her to learn to drive, because it's a skill worth having and if anything did happen to your uncle, it's difficult to adjust to life without a car (in my opinion). If she found that she couldn't cope without the car/your uncle, it's going to be harder to learn as she gets older.0 -
I don't drive, but I wish I could - I'm pregnant and dread public transport with a buggy.
Hubby works out of town, so he will need to learn & stop relying on other people for a lift - but we can't afford lessons really until at least one dmp is paid off!
I agree with the above - if your Aunty doesn't want to drive, there's no point in trying to force her. Your Uncle will just have to learn the bus routes.0 -
i do drive but my dad doesn't.
He did try once , his bro taught him when they were about 18 ish i think. My uncle said he never been so scared in all his life. My dad has no co-ordiantion. if he changes gear he has to look at the gear stick and for some reason has to turn the sterring wheel , so he veers off in in all sorts of directions. It bizaare realy as he has drive tractors etc all his life. But for everyone safety it is better if he doesn't drive, lol. My dad has some fantastic stories about their antics. get my dad and his bro together and you end up crying with laughter it so funny.
My mum drives and is alot younger than my dad so they have never thought about dad needing to drive incase mum can't. My dad cycles everywhere, even at the age of 62 . dad says tho he needs to because if he doesn't he will cease up. he has ill health and cycling helps him stay fit. He did think once about getting a moped but he remembered why he doesn't drive a car and thought better of it,bless him.0 -
I am 27 and can't drive, I never wanted to as it scares me. a former partner bought me lessons for my 21st and i came close to taking my test but then relocated back to my home town and couldn't afford to continue.
I am going to take them after xmas because i know it will make it easier when i have a child and it will open so many doors for me career wise, but i have to admit i am not looking forward to it.
I have seen so many reckless drivers taking risks and it worries me because i could be the safest driver in the world but it only takes one idiot to take a risk and cause an accident that could injure me.0 -
i think she has mixed feelings, think she feels abit odd not driving dont most people drive its like a life skill she hasnt got. Sometimes she feels useless she says?
On the other hand the cost to get through test would be alot and lack of confidence?:footie:0 -
Sounds to me like a total lack of confidence in herself, rather than an "anti-driving" stance then.0
