anyone not drive?

  • I agree, people who don't drive shouldn't take those who do for granted! Occasional lifts are nice when offered, but in general non-drivers should expect to have to make their own arrangements, and if a particular lift becomes a regular thing then they should think about contributing (in kind, if the driver won't accept petrol money).

I reckon I could count on one hand the number of lifts I get over the course of a year. Otherwise it's public transport, walking, bike, or the occasional cab.

  • For those who would like to drive but are a bit fearful for a variety of factors, I wouldn't give up just yet.
    - think of some foolish human being you don't like that does drive and just think if he/she can do it then surely so can I.
    - practice where there's no traffic and it's impossible to crash e.g. some lane by a beach, an empty carpark, etc.
    - there are lots of car computer games where you have a steering wheel and pedals. Try practicing on these to improve your co-ordination.
    - practice with patient people who can relax around.

I don't drive a car, but need to as we live very remote & it is so restricting & inconvienient. Public transport only comes 3 days a week & at unhandy times.
I rely on OH, but it isn't fair on him, so even though i'm knocking on a bit, because of another thread on here, I've realised that I really have to learn.
    It would transform my life.

I can't drive due to being born with an eye disease that left me with very poor vision. I cannot read a number plate from the required 20 meters. It's horrible, as I'm 18 and all of my friends are passing their tests.

Do I wish I could drive? Every day. My friends moan about how they don't like their current car and how they want a nice BMW. I want to give them a punch and remind them how lucky they are.

My brother in law is in a similar position, although his problem is his night vision (or complete lack of it). He was able to take a few lessons before the DLA decided he wasn't allowed to drive, and although he would love to have a licence and be able to drive whenever he wanted, he's just really pleased that he was able to have a few lessons and a wee bit of driving experience, even if it was only for a short while. Such a shame for him, it seems so unfair. I don't know why he isn't allowed to drive in the daytime as he has no problems then, but there you go.

Re friends moaning about wanting a nicer car - pah. I drive a ten year old Micra, I searched high and low for exactly the model I wanted (bigger engine than normal) and I love it to bits. I honestly wouldn't swap it for a BMW and I will be so annoyed when I eventually have to change it due to old age!

Dont drive simply because it is well expensive to learn and I learn better by constantly doing something so am saving for a crash course. The one hour a week thing doesn't work for me as it gets to the following week and I feel back at square one!

Do want to drive though as it is getting annoying seeing people driving to work in a morning in there nice warm cars while im freezing at a bus stop. Then arriving in work looking like a wild woman with wind swept hair while everyone else is coming in imaculate lol :)

Definatly learning and will be passed an in a little banger by this time next year! :)

I can drive, but don't particularly enjoy it. As soon as I move back to London I will sell my car. I do think everyone should learn to drive though. My dad forced my mum to learn and she was so glad he did. He was in a wheelchair in his last few years and her driving meant they had the freedom to keep going out. One of my friends has just lost her husband and she is now virtually housebound because she lives in a village and there are very few buses. The one time I was really greatful for being able to drive was in my early 20s. I lived in a really rough area and walking home or getting the bus was absolutely terrifying.

I have a colleague who absolutely refuses to learn to drive for environmental reasons, but he is always begging for lifts to work/supermarket/cinema. I reckon he asks someone for a lift at least once a day, he is driving us all mad!
  • I've never driven my wife anywhere, because I don't drive at all, so I'm one of those men who always sits in the passenger seat while the woman drives everywhere. Neither of us see anything wrong in the fact, that in our marriage its the woman who does all the driving - its our choice. I don't really need to drive anyway, nor am I interested in driving, especially as my wife likes driving. Also it means we never argue about driving or who is going to drive, nor do we have the expense of running two cars.

Did you really think that after two years the OP still wanted opinions? It's so annoying to start reading and then realise a page in that the thread is totally out of date.
