perhaps i should have added - payed for my three kids to learn to drive as soon as they were old enough and they all passed test by the time they were 18. was hoping for more chuaffers but the only one willing to drive me around scares me to death! talk about accident prone! will stick to local buses and OH thanks!
  • I passed my test when I'd just turned 18. Have been driving ever since and can't imagine life without my wee car :) Oh passed his test 5 years ago and hasn't driven since. He's got no confidence and I'm a control freak anyway so am glad in some ways ;)

Sometimes I think it'd be really handy if he could drive though, When I was in labour with my son I was really lucky that my contractions didn't start when my waters broke so i was able to drive myself to hospital :p

I don't enjoy driving at all, but I couldn't be without the freedom & convenience it brings me.
DD took a while to persuade to start learning, we bought her lessons for her 17th & a license.
Took her a while to start, but she passed her test last year & I doubt she would be without a license now either.

I can't drive but I am starting to think about it now. My OH has always driven me wherever I've needed to go and he loves driving so it's never been a problem. But his health isn't too great at the moment, he's been in hospital twice in the last 6 months, it's 2 hours on the bus so I've had to rely on a very good friend to take me to visit him. I know my friend doesn't mind but I hate having to put on to her when she has her own family to look after and we've got a perfectly good car sitting doing nothing outside.

OH now has an automatic so I know it'll be easier to learn than a manual but it's my confidence that's stopping me, as a passenger you see all the nutters on the road. It also doesn't help that my mother was killed in a car accident (not her fault, idiot drunk driver).

I wish I'd learnt when I was 17 and full of confidence, now I'm in my 40's it's definately harder. I think I'll have a try but with no pressure, if I don't like it I won't do it.

I don't drive. I started driving lessons when Imwas 17 (25 years ago), then failed my driving test. I tried again 5 years later - failed and never really got around to it - even though I say I will do it at the start of every year (along with joining the gym, losing weight, recycling properly:rolleyes:)

I live and work in London and am proud of the fact that despite not driving, I still get around and manage to get everything done. My friend on the other hand is lost without her car - can't go shopping, visit friends, God forbid if she has to go to the airport. I will probably do it one day, just to say that I can - although it will automatic all the way (my clutch control is crap).

I didn't drive- I took lessons at 17, hated it and decided I wasn't going to ever drive as it frightened me and made me feel ill :(

Then I moved away from home and met my husband, who tried to persuade me and I still didn't want to. Then a friend mentioned that she was selling her 15 year old fiesta and it just snapped in my head, we bought that in the August and I passed my practical test in late September.

Best thing I ever did- I wouldn't be without it now, especially with the baby coming.

If I was a driver i would be massive. I walk everywhere. it keeps me fit and allows me to have the odd treat. My husband drives and if it wasn't for him I may have gotten my license - but I am not sure. I have had two kids and public transport can be a pain - but walking an hour to the shops is great for the kids. My son was walking that distance there and back at 3. Both kids are now really fit and not converned about having to walk anywhere. I have seen kids who moan if they have to walk for 5 mins.

    I'm 37 and don't drive.

Did take some lessons about 2 years ago and was told by the instructor I was almost ready for doing the tests. But I hated driving. I was getting stress headaches before my lesson which mysteriously disappeared once I'd gone out and away from the car.

She would always ask me at the end of every lesson whether I'd enjoyed it. I used to lie and say yes but one day I'd just had enough of trying to be fake and told her unfortunately, no, I didn't, I never had and it was no fault of hers. She was a very good fun instructor and had a 93% pass rate, but I just hate being behind the wheel. I don't see cars as freedom - I see them as expensive tin cans that suck up far too much money.

I'm sure I will go back to it one day - probably when something happens and hubby can't drive so I have to. But I think I'll probably do an intensive course to get it over and done with.

  • I passed my test 22 years ago on my first attempt. I didn't enjoy driving much back then and then spent 16 years in London where I had no reason to drive so it was never a problem.

However, I've now moved away and my partner has a car - I had a couple of refresher lessons earlier on this year, but still don't really enjoy it. We live in a town now, so I manage pretty well without driving - I enjoy walking everywhere and we have my partner's car for when we need it.

I think my attitude would be different though if I needed to drive every day, I'm sure that would improve my confidence.
