How could they get rid of building control?! Surely buildings standing upright is a good thing!

Italy sounds gorgeous, glad the volcano didn't cause any hassle to your plans too.

The cotton is really lovely. If you want a challenge go for the jersey, but it really didnt work like anything I've used before, it just pulled everywhere and it was impossible to get straight hems, seams etc! Also take into account the stretch, its no good making it to the same measurements as you would on cotton - I did that and it looked nothing as it gives breathing room, the jersey bodice really needs to be tighter to the body to look anything.

Oh good morning, I was just about to ETA about that wedding you posted - how gorgeous is it?! I'd love to do something like that but I think if I tried to handmake everything and do it on the cheap it would really look as though I had!

I don't know if it's just LA building control they'd get rid of, or whether they'd just get the big contractors to have in-house building control or what, but I don't know where that would leave Joe Bloggs having his loft converted by a one-man outfit...

Yeah was worried about the volcano for a while there, all the Italian airports were closed on Sunday, but it was grand in the end. Thinking a cruise mght be a good option for the summer :D

Hmm, you need special needles and everything don't you as well for jersey? I like the idea of a casual jersey dress that you can just sling on but it might be heavy too in the heat. Hmm...

I don't think mine would be too hot - but definately too heavy to take on holiday anywhere! Aye a ballpoint needle, they're not expensive, they look a bit bigger, I sewed with a normal one for a while and it snagged the fabric a bit.

Ah that makes a bit more sense, it was the last Conservative government who introduced private building control I think? So there would still be jobs, just mostly private instead.

    What wedding is this sorry?

Our travel insurance wont cover us for the volcano, as it went off before we got the insurance, so we need to hope its stopped by the time of our honeymoon.

Awww sounds like you had a lovely time Tete. I want to go! I'll second the happiness that the volcano didn't ruin it for you!

I like both fabrics but I'd lean towards the cotton. Not because of the difficulty factor, but because I had a jersey maxi dress and it never felt right on, it just seemed too stretchy and I charity shopped it a couple of months ago because I didn't like wearing it!

Lets hear a 'Whoop Whoop' for Dinah's sig, there are updated numbers in there now! Do you think you'll make up the shortfall in time?

About four posts up, where the bride is wearing 'my' blue shoes? Remember? Hehe!

Yeah he could work in the private sector and earn double what he's on know but where they'd be rid of him in a flash as soon as there's a bit of a housing slump like there is at the minute. Better money but no security whatsoever. And they let builders get away with murder so that they can keep their contracts, there's no real standardised control with private building control. Sorry, bit of an ally for the cause at this stage!

Oh god, nightmare about the insurance. Seems a bit of a ridiculous thing to say too. Like, well you know LA is on a fault line so we won't cover you if there's an earthquake! I really hope it's all gone by September, god, it seems to have beed dragging on stupidly long as it is!

EDIT - Morning Birdie, grand I think I'll go for the cotton then! :D

Well we have to really! Or at least the portion that can't fit on the CC. I'd hope to be able to maybe shave £1000 off the wedding costs, and then try to save an additional £2500 or so.... I really don't know - I'd love to do it all but I'm not sure thats reasonable. I think my wardrobe might need to have another trim, get another few hundred on ebay.

Ah I remember the wedding now!

Preaching to the choir! I know our lads do a grand job, luckily I don't have any contact with the private sector as its past us by that point.

Sounds like your OH is between a rock and a hard place at the minute then! Lets hope that the Lib Dems have some positive influence on Mr Cameron's plans and his job stays safe!

Good luck with the money plans Dinah!

*will keep buttoned over the politics as I'm a Tory!*

Really glad the Volcano didn't effect your holiday Tete! I kept on hearing about new ash clouds on the radio and hoping it didn't effect you. Sounds like you had a nice time though!! But it's nice to have you back :D As you can see I've totally failed on the MSE break.

I'd say go for cotton too, mainly because I like the pattern more.. I'm sure it'd look great in either though, just the jersey will be more of a challenge! Do you wear that first skirt you made? I really liked that!

Hehe, I had you pegged as a tory girl from the start Cinny! By the way, it may be a stupid question, but why are they called tories for short? OH and I came up with 'conservative sounds like conservatory which shortens to tory' but 99% sure that's wrong!

The Conservatives are descended from the Tory party which ceased being about 150 years ago. Interestingly the word Tory comes from the word t!ra! (Irish)which is where the first Tory politicians were, the word t!ra! means robber or outlaw. Which I happen to love!

Okay, no idea why it thinks accents are a swear, but the irish word is torai without the accents.
