in comparisson to breaking into peoples cars and stealing there belongings, i would say yes it is petty. Yet the police had no interest in even looking at my girlfriends car ater it was broken into.

Because it would be a bigger waste of time as they wouldnt have a hope in hell of catching the people. If someone broke into her car right in front of an unmarked car they would have been interested.

Taken from the Hampshire Police website:

If you lose the HO/RT1 form:
    • you are still legally obliged to produce your documents within 7 days of being asked to do so by the officer who stopped you
    • you should take all your documents (driving licence, insurance certificate, and MOT certificate) into the police station you nominated at the time. If you are unable to remember which station you nominated, you may take them to any police station in England or Wales. When attending the police station you should try and recall the time, date and location you were stopped.
    • the information will be recorded and records tied up

Police drivers especially those who drive unmarked cars are highly trained and will be trained to assess all the risks, only once they did that would they have followed you through the red light.

As I understand it, police may treat a red light as a "Give way" sign only if they have blue lights on and horns sounding. Willing to be corrected, but this was the law when I drove fire engines.

Theft from a car is not really comparable to putting other drivers, your own and potentially pedestrians lives at risk. The fact that you accelerated to try and beat the light probably means you were speeding as well.

    Not sure about this.

I would imagine that there is a reasonable argument here that due to the offence occuring there and then they didnt have time to do so safely.

That said if they crossed the red light and caused an accident there defence would be severly tainted.

A very good point in that he accelerated. Not like he just maintained his speed because it was dangerous to stop. He actively accelerated to beat the light.

This wasn't really jumping a red light though, more an "amber gambler" moment where you put your foot down on amber.

Depending on your speed, sometimes it's safer to continue through an amber light rather than sharply applying your brakes. I've seen people apply the brakes to stop when the light has gone amber only to have the person behind plough into them!

I have very little respect for the police nowadays, as they seem more interested in catching simple petty "crimes" that bring in revenue rather than going after real criminals.

Well perhaps if people weren't committing "petty" crimes then the Police would be able to devote more time to "real" crimes.

A crime is a crime, regardless of how severe or unintentional it was.

Simple enough for them to note registration number for later action. By crossing the red they compounded any danger. I would write to the Chief Constable.

thanks for that, I have done all of the above. Not sure what else I can do or how I pay the fine and who to.

All you need is some evidence that you produced the documents so that if it does go to court you've got something to show that you've done all that is legally required thus avoiding any further action/costs. Did you go back to the station that was listed on the HO/RT1?
