Oh dear, I do throw a lot away - but there is a reason.

I've found a 'magic supermarket' which reduces ALL it's sell-by vegetables to 10p at night. I buy tons of the stuff, and we eat loads and loads of out of date veggies, but some of them inevitably go off  (especially if we go out one evening)

It's interesting to find out what keeps and what doesn't - not always the things you expect!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

I'm ashamed to say I throw out (or rather compost) quite a lot of fruit and salad that is past its best - eg apples gone soft, bananas very over-ripe, lettuce gone brown and cucumber/green peppers disintegrating. I have no problems using up veg etc.

I think this is because there's a snack element to fruit and, to some extent, salad. With four of us (adults) in the house I panic about running out of fruit/salad and overbuy (only able to shop about once a week).

If anyone has a formula for dealing with this I'd be glad to see it! (We don't eat desserts so stewing apples etc not really an option)
The only measure I have been able to take so far is trying to stop people taking just a bit of a pepper for a salad and then leaving the remainder in the fridge to rot while starting on anew pepper next time!

Re buying milk from the milkman, mentioned earlier. I sympathise with buying milk from the milkman because it keeps him in a job. I did that for years, for that reason. It was when it became apparent that the milk he was delivering wasn't the freshest - he delivered it the evening before and it went off quickly (I'm sure this doesn't apply to all milkmen) - that I switched to buying at the supermarket. Have to say that it is a big saving and it means gone-off milk doesn't get poured away.

i must admit to throwing away sooo much food! My biggest failure is taking meat out of the freezer to defrost and then forgetting to cook it in time! Fruit is another big one, I end up taking a banana to work, forgetting to eat it coz I'm busy, carting it back home in my handbag and then after leaving it to fester overnight, discovering it on my next work day bruised and battered only to be chucked!

I have been doing better lately after re-starting slimming world but wish I could plan better!

This week the following springs to mind:
1 slice of ham in the bottom of the pack (i think the boyfriend has a weird phobia of the last rasher of bacon/bit of cheese/piece of ham) so leaves it!
    mouldy strawbs
    new pots
    bread - mouldy
    grapes
    loads more !

a 1/4 of a huge punnet of kiwi fruit that had been forgotten about and a 1/4 of a banana.....not thrown though-into compost bin.
  • I'm really bad at throwing fresh fruit and veg away!

Every week, I end up throwing potato and carrots out. Now the summer's here, it's salad stuff that hasn't lasted the week. I also threw away 2 apples and 2 bananas. I had a huge cupboard re-sort this week so threw alot of out of date and unused items. I hope it's going to make me shop smarter and only buy the things I need, not the things I think I need ;)

A whole chicken. Took it out to defrost yesterday and forgot about it overnight.

Damn, damn, damn.... that's messed up my meal plan for a day or two....

    Sausages for lunch then.... :)

A stick of celery that froze itself to the back of the fridge.
2 pork pies that got droppped in the sand last weekend on a beach picnic. I tried to offload them on DS1 for school lunches but they were still gritty (oops). Some mini scotch eggs bit the dust because i forgot about them but veg didnt go to waste because of a last minute Fritatta for lunch yesterday ( and today & probably tomorrow). Fritatta is excellent, you can hide anything in them !
Some bananas & orange/tangerines festering in the fruit bowl so i think maybe a smoothie later unless someone has a better idea ?
Really i hate wasting anything, food included. I am mean but its not just that, it seems morally wrong to waste things too.(still feeling bad aboiut the scotch eggs i think, ah well);)

You can still cook it ( unless it really is in the bin...)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Ok first confesion from me from JUST today

2 loaves of bread (I did freeze them within date but checked today and heat must have made them go off before I put them in)

1/2 box of raspberries, also in date but got squashed

2 corn on the cobs, kids wasted

Dog ate the hard cheese so can get away with that one

I think I should start filling this in every week and writing it down as I regularly throw away a bag full every couple of days or overcook at meal times and have excess waste. This way I will have to write it down and have someone to answer to lol
One day I might be more organised...........
