  • My daughter went to Morrisons in Bracknell on Monday 30th November and they had never heard of any of these deals on champagne.

Jane MacQuitty (Times) has some interesting comments:

"Champagne is the only French region to field some truly terrible wines in 2009. All those supposedly enticing, much hyped, half-price vintage and non-vintage champagne deals and wines have mostly turned out to be dross. Just because a wine is dirt cheap does not mean that it's a bargain."

"Given the glut of unsold champagne in the greedy Champenois' cellars, around four years' supply, due to the global recession, I expect to see more tasty cut-price champagne deals popping up between now and Christmas"

"Oudinot Brut from M&S is horrible. I would not even clean the bath with it! "

"sorry but Lindauer has been rubbish for years"

On a more positive note, for Cava, she recommends:

"2009's best cheap everyday party sparkler is Waitrose's Cava La Rosca Brut from Spain a zippy, lime and lemon-charged £4.79 fizz"

and "the light, floral, lively, lemony Extra Cuvee Seleccionada Codorniu Brut, an elegant methode champenoise fizz again from the Cava region of Spain, best bought at Morrisons..........where it's just £4.99 a pop."

She also had some strong opinions on the Which? tasting:

"thin, acidic and cheesey-scented Sainsbury’s Blanc de Noirs Brut"

    "Veuve Clicquot’s dull, waxy Brut"

"the Co-op’s Les Pionniers (£15.55) smelt so foul it was a wonder that I was brave enough to put it in my mouth."

    And on the sparkling wines:

"the revolting, dirty Griffith Park Brut, a cheap, sub £7 fizz from Australia"

"Marks & Spencer’s Kiwi Bluff Hill Brut (£8.99), always a lacklustre, second string from the Montana stable"

"Graham Beck ....always deeply ordinary and poor value "

best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

  • We did a blind tasting about a year ago where we tasted a variety of champagne and sparkling wine, including Moet, Bollinger and Laurent Perrier, amongst others The surprise result (to us anyway) was that Hardy's Crest Chardonnay Pinot Noir came joint top with the Bollinger. I won't buy something just because its cheap - it has to be good quality too, but I would certainly recommend that you try the Hardy's Crest, especially with the £6 per bottle deal at Asda currently.
  • If you only want a couple of bottles of champagne then if you buy 4 bottles of wine at the same time you still get an additional 5% off at Sainsbury's

If you want 6 bottles then at M&S you get 25% off wines and champagne when you buy 6 but I don't know how long that is on for.
  • Went into local Morrisons last Friday. Sold out. Manager told me he had only recieved one box of each, no ,ore expected. They were pushing other brands. So much for an offer.

Althought the maximum is 4 per customer if you make it up to 6 bottles with something else the 5% discount comes off the original price not the discounted price.
This is the best bargain in House Marque champagnes. £12.50 per bottle and as stated under £12 if you mix it with any other wine to make up 6 bottles. Heidsick Monopole Blue Top and they still had plenty in Tesco High Wycombe (loudwater) store. Can't say whether it is a good one but it should be fine as Heidsick have a good name.
    "0844 COSTS YOU MORE"
  • I spotted 2 bottles of Heideseck Blue Label for £25 in Tesco last night. Great value at only £12.50 per bottle!
  • have visited morrisons three times now for the champagne. They only have the cheaper champagne on the shelves and when asked today was told they are not restocking.
