Mix a mugfull of cooking salt with just enough water to make it moist but not runny. Wet yourself all over in the shower. Switch the water off and use the salt as a skin scrub all over. Rub hard on any rough areas. Rinse off with water and feel how soft your skin is!

Please don't use salt for this. Salt is very drying to the skin in the long run, by which I mean a few days, and it will damage the skin's barrier function.

If you have to scrub your skin then use sugar.

I am skeptical that even that would have any real beneficial effects.

Ah is that why The Sanctuary mix salt with essential oils etc for their salt scrub??

I expect the salt scrubs bought might be dead sea salt or similar. Table salt is very drying, not sure on dead sea salt. I wouldn't exfoliate using salt myself.
sugar maybe but I am inclinded to think the grains might be rather large and square and so not too good.

Oatmeal can be used as a gentle cheap exfoliater for the face mixed with cleanser. But I wouldn't do the whole body this way coz of blocking the plumbing in the bath or shower.

It never occurred to me that anyone would plan to do it every day! Once a week or once a fortnight is plenty. I've never found it to be drying and it leaves the skin amazingly soft. Table salt is too fine to work - I always use cooking salt.
  • After washing and conditioning hair, I fill the sink up with cool water and add a good slosh of cider vinegar. (I'm brunette- apparantly blondes can use lemon juice). Then I lean over & stick my hair in (I use a cup to pour the water over the top and back). It is supposed to be good for a couple of reasons: 1) makes your hair shiny 2) gets rid of product residue and prevents buildup.

I haven't tried many proper homemade products, most recipies I have found seem to involve a lot of things like putting yogurt on your face or raw eggs in your hair! (Yogurt is not so bad but I don't fancy anything that involves raw eggs!)
However I do make my own bath bombs, which work out considerably cheaper then shop bought ones, plus I can choose what to put in eg. I only use pure essential oils, not artificial scents. (I try and avoid chemical laden products.)

I hope people do put some more tips on here, I am also interested to know if anyone makes their own products. I have found recipies on the internet for making cleansers, lotions, lip balms etc. so I'm tempted to give it a go.
  • someone says bicarb is a good exfoliator? i need to make a homemade exfoliator, i only need to use it a couple of times - i have a milia (white spot near my eye) and the doc recomends a couple of tries with an exfoliator or else getting it lanced - not too keen on getting it lanced so a home made exfolitor would be great!!

I have one of these white spots it was quite big initially. I haven't found exfoliating any good at all. Mine is now hardly visible.

I have used the oil cleansing method for facial cleansing 3 times a week for 2 weeks and spotted the oil on nearly everyday (mini treatment) just to treat the spot since it arrived. It's on its way out!

I wouldn't have a lancing in case of scarring, that and I'm a bit soft :D

It just seems to be disappearing, which is nice :j

I get them occasionally.....weird how they pop up in random places  I just get a sterilised needle and break the skin and just squeeze it out and luckily doesn't ever scar, but no doubt my rapid disposal method is not a good one for everybody else:rotfl::rotfl:

  • I need a nice moisturiser for sensitive skin. Best I've used is Elemis pro-collagen marine cream, but it is too expensive. Any ideas on moisturisers would be appreciated.

Gonna try the oil cleansing method. Sounds great for my skin type.
