I've brought things off an ebay seller-who makes her own soaps/lip balms etc which were yummy! saves me the mess, and she didntt charge a lot of money for them either.

Oh goodness, is Baldwins still there? We used to pop in for hot sasperilla when I was young. I used to live a couple of roads away!
    :smileyhea "here, hare, here" :smileyhea
  • Thanks for your replies, yes Baldwins is still there, they have an internet site and mail order service. Am waiting for my catalogue to come through. It used to be the highlight of my week going there when I lived in South London, very inspirational. I shall have a look on ebay, forgot they seem to do everything.:j

    Hi
I watched the programme last night on channel 4 "how toxic are you". Was quite horrified. Years age I used to make my own face creams. I got most of my supplies from Baldwins in the Walworth road. Anyone elso tried this? There are loads of recipies on the internet, just need the ingredients eg. emulsifying wax and beeswax.

You can get emulsifying wax in Baldwins but just be aware that it actually contains Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, so best avoided in my opinion. I asked Baldwins what the ingredients were for their wax and they kindly sent me the information, I was quite shocked to see this. Since then I have avoided emulsifying wax as you never know what is in it.

For Beeswax, have a look in the phone book to see if you have a local bee keeper who can sell you some. It is loads cheaper than buying online.

    Hi,

I posted this in the "Old Style" section but no replies..... so thought would try this section!!!

    Hi all.

I am new here, my first post. I have read loads over the last couple of years on this site, its excellent.

Anyway, I have decided to use more traditional methods to clean around my home. 1 - for the economical point, and 2) I hate all the nasty stuff in products! You can pretty much use just vinegar, bicarb, lemon, and water for all your cleaning around the house, think of all that money saved on expensive products. Im loving it.

I would really like to make my own shampoo, and cant find a shampoo recipe as such on the net, they are usually just rinse recipes. Has anyone ever made their own or know how to make it? Ive had a look into castille soap and essential oils, anyone tried this?

    Thanks

Ive recently seen something on the net somewhere (cant remember where), to use bicard of soda and vinegar on your hair instead of shampoo....i just wet my hair through in the shower, a bit of bicard on my palm and mix with water to create a paste...rubbed into my scalp, massaged in a while (feels quite dry and rough) and then rinsed with warm water, then vinegar mixed with water. Felt great afterwards. Ive had no dandruff like i sometimes do if i dont wash it every day.

Any other tips or rememdies appreciated.

No I haven't tried it. I think you can buy pure soap flakes in some supermarkets for washing delicates, cashmere and that kind of thing. Otherwise I'd be tempted to grate a soap bar with the least (or preferably) no additives I could find as an alternative.
