Hiya,:hello:
I had a hunt on the hair threads in the mega index, but couldn't see anything about thickening hair.
Does anyone know of any recipes for a home made hair thickener. A treat I used to allow myself was John Frieda's hair thickening spray, but at a fiver a bottle, I've given it up!
I saw one recipe after a massive google trawl here, involving rice water for starch, but wondered if any OS-ers had any alternatives.
Thanks in advance!
Weezl x
PS the hair hasn't got any thinner on my new challenge, honest!

Hi Weezl, try asking on the Health and Beauty board, or have a nosy through the Boots thread on the Grabbit board. I know Boots can be dear for some things, but if you were to buy any necessaries (is that a word)
and save the points you could maybe get enough for a treat.
Mobile top ups gain points in Boots, or...better still, are you on Pigsback, you could cash in your Piggy points for a Boots voucher.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
Hi Weezl
Will have to investigate that there link of yours.
If you find anything good would appreciate if you let me know.
In my case - it would need to be natural - as I am swopping over to natural-type cosmetics (eg homemade).
Anything that would work on my hair ROCKS.

Ok, a while ago I remember seeing a thread where people had great ideas/receipes for looking good that were inexpensive, I was hooked but I can't seem to find it now. I apologise if this is old hat, but I am really interested in people who make their own face masks, hair masks, or those who swear by more traditional products. I would also like to know if anyone can recommend any books that have a more traditional approach to health and beauty. I am particularly interested in old style anti-ageing?;)
If there is another thread already going can someone give me a link? Thanks0 -

After reading this article (posted quite recently by another member of MSE - sorry can't remember who) about shampoo I've been experimenting recently with using pure baby soap to wash my hair and using a weak solution of raspberry vinegar in the final rinse instead of conditioner.
I was sceptical at first but much to my suprise it actually worked!! I live in a very soft water area, so that helps. The soap lathers up beautifully on my hair and removes all the muck without totally stripping out the oils. I then rinse until all the soap is out - but at this point my hair feels awful - almost matted - but stick with it . I then put a couple of teaspoons of vinegar in a litre jug of warm water and rinse this through my hair. This leaves it shiny and manageable without using conditioner. The only smell that is left (if any) is of raspberry.
The theory behind this is that hard water is alkali and makes the scales on your hair stand up. A weak acid solution makes the cuticles on the hair lie flat again.
Works for me and is very Money Saving.
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

My most recent 'old style beauty' find is to use coconut oil as a night cream. It is not greasy at all and has done more for the appearance of my fine lines and wrinkles than any other night cream.
The other night I used it as a body lotion after my shower and was amazed at how quickly it was absorbed. My skin felt great all the following day
I use coconut oil in cookin so just borrowed a bit out of that jar, very versatile stuff :T0 -
Mix a mugfull of cooking salt with just enough water to make it moist but not runny. Wet yourself all over in the shower. Switch the water off and use the salt as a skin scrub all over. Rub hard on any rough areas. Rinse off with water and feel how soft your skin is!0
