  • Mr Something and I distracted the girls with Ponyo and finally did the kitchen inventory today! 5 sides of A4 lined paper (which I've backed up in Excel before the paper gets hidden/eaten/shredded by aforementioned girls) and still haven't done the larder! I definitely have enough in to last until February if I'm organised, apart from fresh milk and possibly £5 on fruit and veg.

For dinner tonight we had half a pack of reduced finest sausages (I'm totally stealing ifonlyitwaseasier's sausage and mustard puff idea for the other half pack!) mash from potatoes that desperately needed using, parsnips that were on the turn and tinned sweetcorn. Yums :)

I will join you with £5 a day until 10th January so I make that £70. We are 4 adults fulltime and 2 teenagers part-time. Do not have loads of extra stuff from Christmas but have loads in freezer.

We are off on holiday in 10 weeks time and need to get spending money saved so this will be a good start. Once we use up what we have will revise the £5 a day lol

Just a quick update, have managed to stay withing my £5 a day and from 27th december have spend £34. :j Have only been to shop 6 out of the 9 days s far so that has helped.

Really struggling but pleased to say yesterday was a NSD as made soup from things in fridge and rather than make spaghetti bolognasise tonight that I needed to go buy mince and mushrooms for I am making chicken curre, chicken in freezer, onions in fridge and jar of curry sauce in cupboard lol

I will have to go to tomorrow to get bread and milk but hopeing to stay withing my £5 a day.

Have you ever had it cooked? Cant remember exactly what I did once but it was something like sweat a chopped onion with the finely chopped cabbage and a grated apple then add some blackberry or black currant jam or red currant jelly and if you want some red wine, let it cook slowly either on the hob or in the oven. Think I may have added a knob or two of butter as well. the recipe I used had some spices in but i didnt put them in, possibly cinnamon and cloves. It makes a lovely different vegetable dish to duck, turkey, pork or even bangers and mash. If it isnt sweet enough just add some brown sugar to it. HTH

Red cabbage- shred and add to saucepan, add a chopped onion and a chopped apple if you have one, half a cup of water, a bit of cider vinegar, a clove or 2 and some sugar then simmer for an hour or so (I put it in the rayburn oven) lovely! Especially with sausage and mash!

I havnt posted for a few days because OH kindly decided to take the fireplace down and rebuild it on new years day! It was scheduled to be started yesterday but is logic told him that if it was finished before it was meant to be started then I wouldnt be able to moan! The house was full of dust and rubble as it took 2 days to take down, he seemed surprised that I wasnt happy with a ton of rubble in the middle of the room overnight! Strange I know, im sure we all want an indoor rockery! But the wall is rebuilt and just needs cementing and plastering.

So far my challenge not to spend more than £10 a week from xmas eve for 2 weeks is working! Unless I have to go out to the shops again before Saturday I will have succeded! I have enough food in till saturday and have booked an ASDA shop to be delivered on saturday, Im trying hard to stick to £100 per week, 2 adults and 4 'bottomless pit' teenagers! Im hoping to stretch that £100 to last 10 days but who knows!

Cabbage ummmmm........... brown some bacon and onion then toss in finely chopped cabbage, pop in a tablespoon of water and put the lid on and cook for 5 mins, or make bubble and squeak or a stir fry?

Well, tonight's storecupboard dinner was Chicken Risotto :)

Good example of fusion cuisine though - the chicken was stripped off chinese style chicken portions that my mum had given us yesterday and joined some onion, peas and sweetcorn with a touch of chinese five spice and soy to make a chi-talian dish! Sounds a bit wrong, was yummy though.

Bit hungry now, but that's probably at least in part cause we're used to eating, eating, eating. Something has to change, both for our waistlines and our wallets...

Tomorrow is to be the left over beef (also gifted from my mum!) in sweet and sour that we have... a 2l bottle of the stuff! So once we start that, we're gonna be on a S&S kick for a while! >< But, with some rice, it should be tasty. :)
    On the up :D
