Embarrassing isn't it, when friends come to stay and they find themselves surrounded by boxes of lentils and packets of pasta. One relative commented "Blimey - are you stocking up for World War 3?" We have a big kitchen cupboard which is totally full, and after a bulk-buying visit to Costo, our garage gets pretty full too. And I'm desperately trying to run our big garage freezer down enough to make room for all this year's soft fruit and vegetable crop surplus which will need space in a couple of months' time. We're obviously not eating fast enough!0

I started making a tomato pasta sauce the other day then realised I didn't have enough pasta or any tomato puree.
I had enough macaroni for a largish adult portion so I made this and everyone asked me to make it again:
olive oil, garlic and 2 tins tomato - reduced with some dried herbs and 3 blocks of frozen chopped spinach. Add 2 drained tins of beans (I used flageolet and butterbean) Add enough cooked pasta for one adult portion. Plenty for 2 adults and 2 little ones and great if there's some garlic bread hiding in the freezer too.
EDIT: I forgot the important bit! A dollop of soft cheese on each plate when serving made it taste really rich.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
LIZ33 - take your puff pastry roll out and cut into square shape. Score inside each square about 1 cm from the edge. Spread with pesto and top with slices of cherry toms. Sprimkle a bit of cheese on top (if you have it) season and bake 200C for 20 - 25 mins. Serve with salad or veg.
Layer slices of unkooked potato with onion and baked beans. Bake covered with foil until last 10 mins at 200c for at least an hour but may take longer depending on thickness/type of potato used"With no money you start to discover your own inner resource" GK Chesterton2 adults, 3 children0 -
i am trying to run down the cupboards to save buying food this month - i am down to the sweet stuff, pudding rice, blancmage packs, angels delight, semolina, tapioca, and bizarrely a few packs of peppermint teabags.
is there anything i can do with these things to make them more interesting and can you make a cake with teabag flavourings?0 -
I think your best bet would be to pop over to old style http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=33 and ask the lovely lads and lasses over there.0

I'm going to try and do a Store Cupboard/Freezer Challenge for the rest of the month.
I have quite a few tins etc and alot in the freezers still.
Ideally I want to get one of the freezers emptied so it can be defrosted.
The only things I will be buying will be milk and fresh juice from the milkman, and have my organic veg box weekly.
All other items will have to come from the freezer and store cupboard.
I don't have to do this to save money but want to get things turned around within my stocks, and I can then see as well what items I have in store that we still aren't using and eliminate them from my future grocery shopping. My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
