Any ideas on the dried milk?

I'm going to give the potato bake a go sometime this week.

Still can't decide re the jars though. What sort of thing am I looking for/to avoid when I examine it? just to give an indication...

I'd use the dried milk. I successfully used flour last night that was over 2 years old. Perhaps I just have a slack attitude with dates, but I hate waste.

'Best Before' means that the product will be at its best before that date, it doesn't mean it has to be consumed before that date -for that you need to look at the 'use by' date. Dried milk probably won't have a use by date.

Excellent, I hate waste too, I think if I have paid good money out for it then I'll be dammed if I will throw it out!!

If the little safety bubble bit you press on the lid of the jar is still indented, then that's a good sign - if it's popped up and you can press it - that means it might have been opened at some point or else the contents may be fermenting and popped the lid slightly - in that case I would be cautious ;)

    Hi

I need to get to the bottom of my small chest freezer and defrost/clean it out.

I also have a small freezer on my fridge/freezer and used to be able to manage with just this, but baking and bulk cooking and bargins put pay to this!

Sure i am not the only 1 with a freezer full of stuff.

    I have

2 bags asda `cook from frozen` chicken pieces
    1 bag aldi salmon fillets
    500g mince beef from lidl
    1 brown loaf
    brocoli
    corn on cob
    1 chicken from co op
    stir fry veg
    sliced rhubarb
    cake slices-for lunch boxes
    4 bananas
    8 pototo waffles
    10 sausages
    16 indian starters- lidl
    chopped onions
    sliced peppers

Will have to see what has fallen to the bottom!

But thats a start, looks like i go to too many supermarkets!

Going to do toad in the hole on Mon night and will have the whole chicken next sat when mil comes for tea, so thats 2 bits down.

I must keep out of the supermarket this week.

This is strange i did this yesterday!

    Here's my list

    1x battered fish portion
    1x beefburger
    2x chicken fillets
    1x thai red curry
    2x bean burgers
2x bags of peas (forgot i had some and then bought another bag)
chopped carrots (i always chop and freeze any left over veg at the end of the week, then it's easy to use up)
    1x naan bread
15x vegi sausages (got these reduced)
    2x bean and tomato stew
    1x leek and ppotato soup
    2x quorn fillets
    1x potato and rosemary bread
    onion rings (about four portions)
    chips (about 2/3 portions)
4x part bake baguette (got these reduced)
    11x vegetable fingers
    2x vegetable chilli

    i also have storecupboard stuff

    So my menu is
    Saturday
Roasted peppers stuffed with quinnoa, cous cous and vegetables, topped with spicy tomato salsa, fajita mix vegetables with qorn strips and onion rings

    Sunday
    Chilli and potato bake

    Monday
Burgers, chips and beans (aka Kid's tea)

    Tuesday
Bean and cheese toasties (i work til 9pm that night)

    Wednesday
Sausage and bean casserole with pasta

    Thurday
Leek and potato soup with pasta, and, potato and rosemary bread

    Friday
Thai red curry with vegetable noodles

Well that leaves quite a lot for next week so i'm hoping i don't need to shop for this week or next week. I spent £17 yesterday but that included £4 cat food, 65p cat biscuits and £4.50 cat litter, plus £2 deodorant so only about £6 was actually on food for us, most of which was fruit.
  • I was just thinking about this yesterday! Will try to get a list done later...

I did a complete "audit" of my cupboards\fridge\freezer etc. a couple of weeks ago and am horrified by the amount of food I have! Yet I still can't into the habit of doing a meal plan...

I only have a small under counter fridge freezer, but somehow have managed to squash the following into my tiny freezer: -

    2 salmon fillets
    3 white fish fillets
    4 sausages
    4 chicken thighs
    8 potato waffles
1 tub of soup (HM broccoli & cheese, mmm!)
1 tub of mystery (I have no idea what's in it!)
    2 potato cakes
1 portion of stir fry beef
    3 mini pizzas - 5p each, bargain!
    Chopped onion
    Stirfry mix
    Lemon slices
    2 packs of smoothie mix
    A chilli!

Plus everything else I think I could manage for over a month with what I have, yet I will still be drawn to supermarkets :(

I have also found 4 beef burgers
    6 large t cakes
    10 hot dog rolls
    4 fruit t cakes
    hm tuna and pot cakes
    small amount of oven chips

so tues will be burgers in t cakes with oven chips!

Will need to pop into aldi for some bananas, so will take £5 with me, took a £10 last week and spent it all!

Have added to freezer today as I have made 2 x ds sandwichs for packed lunch-bread was already in, just added filling.

Think when I have got to the bottom of it I will do a big meal plan, of say Mon night sausage
    Tues night chicken
Weds night Hm pizza and so on.

I will be organized 1 day!
