hi everyone,
I am coming to the end of my student loan and so have started a store cupboard challenge as I need to stretch the food I have to last. I need to get as much out of them as I can though I have a few "issues" lol
I have come across some dried milk which I normally use in making bread, the label it says Best Before End (see lid) Jun 2006 - does this mean I can't use it? I have another and this one seems to have been pushed to the back of the cupboard for awhile lol. I hate to throw anything out.
I have also found a number of jars, Hoi-sin and Plum, Creamy White Wine Sauce for Cooking, plum and ginger sauce and Teriyaki all are labelled similarly with dates going back to 2007/2006. Are they safe to use?
Also can anyone come up with something to do with these items?
Packets - Cheese sauce, Parsley sauce,
a jar of Spread and Bake Tikka (other than the obv as I dont have any chicken to put it on)
kippers and a haddock loin (never eaten these before so a bit wary)
some random meat (not a clue what it is as the label has got lost)
x 6 bacon slices
Thanks

best before dates are iffy. obvioulsly the manufacturer would say dont use them. However, before I throw anything away I decide whether its a fresh item or a dried item and what could possibly happen to me! I am wary of meat, fish etc. and would never use them too far past the best before date but the jars are vacuum sealed and if they are off then the lid would be blown and raised slightly on the top. it is up to your integrity though.
we use jars like your creamy one for potato bakes as they are cheap. layers of potato, onion, a bit of mixed veg and the sauce and its particularly good with a bit of bacon . its my husbands speciality and he calls it 'stuffato' ie stuff and potatoes cos it could have anything in it. but it is good and very cheap.
