My first thought was onion and potato bake with cheese served with sausages.
Peel spuds and slice thinly. Chop onion and grate cheese. Layer a dish with potoatoes, then onions and cheese, then another layer of potato and so on. Cook until potatoes are soft and gate more cheese over the top so that it bubbles nicely. Serve with grilled sausages.
Sorry not very exciting but sounds tasty to me!!

I make a baked bean and potoato hash (although this needs leeks in it but you could bung in some other veg if you have it).
Part boil spuds and grate. Mix in some dried sage, tin of baked beans, leeks, cheese and cook on hob in frying pan. Rather than mess about trying to turn the massive hash over I then stick it under the grill to cook the top side.
I must admit I always find my hash is more like mash as my spuds always seem too wet but that doesn't put us off, still tastes nice and my H doesn't complain (always a good sign!).

    Hope that helps.

    How about chilli-con-carne?

Here's an easy recipe, (but there's more on the web if you do a quick google).

You don't need to be too fussy about the ingredients. Do you have garlic & dried herbs? You can use oregano or mixed herbs instead of marjoram. If you don't have tomato puree, ketchup can be used, (just leave out the sugar). And most kinds of stock cubes should be ok. Kidney beans are best, but you could use baked beans if you don't want to spend more money (just leave out the tom puree and sugar) and stir in the beans last!

You can serve the chilli with baked potatoes or with rice if you have it. Yummy!

You could make a small turkey casserole:

Chop the onions and carrots into small pieces (about half a cm). If you have any garlic, crush this with the side of your knife and cut it up finely (or use a garlic press)

In saucepan (one that has a lid), fry the onions gently in oil or butter over a low heat until soft and almost transparent, then add the carrots (and garlic if using) and fry for a couple more minutes.

Cut the turkey breast into large chunks, add to the pan and turn up the heat a little so that the fat is sizzling, and keep turning so that the outside of all of the pieces goes white rather than pink.

If you have a splash of wine (or a glass!), now's the time to add it. If there are any sticky bits on the pan, stir, and they'll come off. If you don't have any wine, then a spoonful of wine, sherry or balsamic vinegar would be nice. Add a tin of tomatoes, and if you can find a bayleaf and maybe some thyme or rosemary, chuck a bit of that it. Grind a bit of pepper over it too, and leave to cook on a low heat. Keep checking to make sure it doesn't get too dry. If it looks like it needs more liquid, you can add either wine, stock (if made from powder/cube, make it weak as they're salty) or even water.

If you have any tomato puree, add a spoonful of that too, or a small squeeze of ketchup.

I'd serve this with a baked potato with lots of butter. But I would also go out and get some green veggies to serve with it. Frozen peas would be easiest (boil water, add peas, when peas float they're done), but fresh spinach sauted with a little butter would also be great (spinach and peas go together well).

My boyfriend is normally the cook in our house because i'm pretty rubbish at it!
In a moment of madness I said I would cook us dinner tonight but i can't think what to make! I don't really want to buy anything so was wondering if anyone had any simple ideas out of what we have in the cupboards. It's just for the 2 of us.

    Frozen mince
2 frozen turkey breast steaks (quite small though)
    Whole bag of potatoes
    Big block of cheddar cheese
    Lots of sausages
    1 onion
    tins of chopped tomatoes
    baked beans
    carrots
    eggs

and that's about it other than flour etc!

Any ideas? I don't really want to make cottage pie as he makes that quite often and mine wont be nearly as good as his!

What did you make in the end  I'll add this to the main storecupboard challenge thread, as it's now fallen from the front page of OS ;)

I had lentils of all colours and not a clue what to do with them until I found Gingham Ribbon's vegetarian meal planner threads :T ....... here, here, and here

... from which I learned that green lentils need to be cooked before you add them to a recipe, red lentils don't, and that green and brown lentils are interchangeable in recipes

    how about lentil lasagne? ;)

    or lentil shepherd's pie?

and this thread might be useful
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
