So when people come on here and say they have been told they are "eligible" for the fabled Advantage Gold account and all they have is a Step account you still have to have a credit search? It's a bloody swizz.

RBS do have a 'offers' section that staff can see pre-approved offers on (confirmed by stclair) but the difference is they will credit search you - i.e. pre approved offers subject to a credit check.

However with HSBC, if you have an account review they do one credit search and then offer you whatever you're eligible for - so say it showed me as eligible for a CC with £5k limit, a £7k loan and a £1000 o/d I could get them all after the credit search. However, if the credit search came back worse than the last CAIS data share whereby they allocated the pre-approved limits, they could be changed to say a CC of £2k limit and no loan. Similarly, if your credit search was better, the loan and CC limits may come back higher.

On my account review it showed a loan of £11k and o/d of £1500 and CC with £9k. After search loan went to £7k and CC went to £2500 and o/d went to £700.....

    Following me...? lol

Natwest were the ones that used to write out saying 'congratulations - we've upgraded you to a full bank account' and then in the small print it would say *subject to a satisfactory credit search. The customer would have to go into branch and the adviser would run a full account application including a credit search without the customers authority! Nice marketing methods Natwest, nice....!

It was all a con and made people get searched unnecessarily.... ;)

They said my recent statement was returned to BOS and marked as 'Unknown Address' so they wanted me to confirm my address and they had my correct address on their computer so god knows what happened.

When Lloyds TSB told me (in the branch) I was eligible for an upgrade from Cash a/c to Classic a/c, then said I would get a "full" debit/cash card (i.e. non-Lloyds TSB cash machines as well) and a chequebook. I got the a/c and the new cash card, but they said "computer said you can't have a chequebook." Luckily they said they don't do a credit search and they didn't.

I went into Barclays after work to ask for a cheque book, and left with the personal bankers brothers CV to hand into the school I work at.

    Was quite amusing. :D
