  • Don't worry KP the Harvest assembly isn't until mid October. Not sure if that is around Eid or not. The children we teach generally don't fast though so if we do do some cooking then we will be OK. Might make blackberry and apple crumble with them. The muslem assistants will feel very holy if they do the cooking but if they want o be away from the food I would make sure to give them an activity away from it. I certainly will discuss it with them.
Thanks for the welcome back Messy will be in touch!
KP the house sounds very exciting!!

  • Thanks for the nombers mcl:D rarely look at the peoples post numbers on threads.

There is no `cure` for aspergers the `cure` comes from within. Knowing your tolerance levels and learning coping mechanisims.

Do you get irrationally mad if your routine has had to be changed?
    Is verbal communication difficult?

As I wrote that your pictures struck me, you take wonderful pictures and with asd visual communication is usually a lot easier than verbal.

Do you `hear` the language through the visual input.
  • i totally understand how you feel although my reason for being a bit of a loner is my mental health !!
its not nice at all and thank goodness for the net aye???

i get more ajitated than fustrated if my daily routine has been changed thus i keep it the same, as i know what has to be done that day, and what time, etc... The only time i have no probs is when im out with my camera as thats 2nd nature to me (that said, i plan where i go and what time), and if i see a shot, yes, can get fustrated but i know what the outcome will be and thats a good shot.

With verbal communication, the problem with it is that i cant tell if i have went overboard, if ive said something to upset sum1, cant tell if im beign boring etc... its happened loads of times where i have talked, and all of a sudden, ive said something which i think is nice and friendly and have been shouted at and have been told i was arragant, etc.... Also, i can start to talk about things i find intresting but no1 else finds it - ie, i can talk about aviation, photography or tecnocal specifiations of an F1 car yet i find intresting but no1 else does and i dont know if im making them sleepy

Thats anohter reason i dont have friends, is because verbal comms is hard as i keep saying things that i think are nice but others can pretray them to be bad - but i still think it is over reaction by them, i try to keep things nice but oh well, their problem.

If i see a picture, i can understand more, its like picture instructions rather than verbal, its easier to understand (tho harder to explain) ie, if its a map, and sum1 said, go ahead for 3 roads, turn left, go 2 roads down and turn right, it isnt as easy as it would be if i had a map (sumtimes get right left mixed up)

  • Morning all :)

Should have known Messy would be the gobbyest ;)

My nephew is autistic. He was diagnosed a year ago, he's just turned 5. At the moment he is a gorgeous, funny blonde haired blue eyed boy. He has terrible frustrated rages and has a lot of trouble communicating verbally. He has to have normal daily routines. When he stays with us he knows where the dvds are kept and will sit in front of one of the 5 he likes (My children are teenagers and don't watch disney videos anymore! so I don't have much of a choice..) and hates anyone to get in the way of the television. It is so difficult to try to get him interested in anything else that we just don't bother. I worry about life for him as he gets older and is not the adorable little boy anymore.

  • Hi phillipa is he and the family getting much help?

Are his school specialised enough to help him?

pecs is an excellent form of communication for autisim
    (picture exchange communication system)

visual daily planners. take photographs of anything and everything, bathrooms toilets, meals, parks etc... Laminate the photos, and show him the photo when you are doing something using speech as well, encourage him to speak too. Makaton is excellent sign language.

Crikey could go on all day.

Rages in a 5 year old are one thing, he is small enough to manage, but when puperty hits they tend to get worse due to a lack of understanding of their emotions and physical feelings.

    Messy.

Thanks Messy ~ he goes to a school in Worcester that deals with autistic spectrum children. They have pictures of everyone and everything which he uses to point to to ask for things. They do seem to get a great deal of help ~ I just worry :)
