mclaren wrote:Have to disagree - I dont get why people do it on rememberance sunday and rememberance day (when they usually are within 5 days of each other) yet poeple moan about the amoun of tv coverage with 9/11.
The problem i see is that WW2 was over 60 years ago, its very old now, 9/11 was only 5 years ago. Its like 7/7 - should that be forgotten about?
And i wouldnt call 9/11 a "little thing" - with in excess of 3000 being killed...
(im not having a go btw, just putting my opinion)
Didn't think you were having a go at all, we had a good discussion about it at school. I like to keep a cheerful view on things and not let it get me down at all. Every "little thing" to me is the gulf war (both!), Falklands, the IRA's goodness knows how many years of bombings (one of which I was present at!).
Rememberance day was about WW1 not WW2, its evolved over the years and veterans of many conflicts are there. Remember all the conflicts that are forgotton about, how many soldiers and innocent people died in Vietnam, Korea and oh so many others. If we had a rememberance for all of them we would really never get anythign done. Having them for recent ones is a future problem, will there be an outcry when we stop remembering 9/11 and start remembering the next big thing? Or will we really just add to it?
Remeberance day gives me a chance to stop and think (although to be honest these days its mostly what is that kid in the corner up to as I'm always at work). Rememberance Sunday give me the chance to go to a service and really think, I see veterans from many places, I see children and adults. I take my son and I tell him its our chance to remember ALL the people who have lost their lives both in conflict and in acts of terrorism.
Oh and I don't watch all the programmes about 9/11 or 7/7 - I just am not interested in them, I saw what happend at the time the carnage the disbelief and I just cant see the point in seeing it over and over with a few more views added. I know how I felt then and the feelings are simply not as powerful now - my memory gives me all I need. I can remember hearing of 9/11 and seeing it much later (I was in an office and didn't see anything till I got home). I can remember hearing about 7/7 and standing in a corridor looking in horror at a television. More vivid to me is a picture of about 20 of my family on Boxing day all staring at the telly in disbelief over the Tsunami. My cousin who is a minister leading us all in a prayer. The Pakistan earthquake for me is 5 boys in our school who had been there a year before on a special trip standing every lunchtime by the tills in the canteen to collect change.
I'd rather just look at a picture and remember my own feelings than watch a programme and hear everybody elses. People like you make that possible Mclaren - a powerful image and your own memory is a million times better for me than a documentary. The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0 -
I am ok thanks Phillipa.:D Being back at work is good therapy. Days fly by, and so much to think about when I am there come home really tired.
Give my love to urbs.:D
Asked Mr 4x4 for some space last week then he texts me yesterday to ask if I am ok. Sort of made me a bit  and thought  at the same time. He has been talking to a friend of mine and am seeing her tomorrow so will find out what he has said. Oh dear very teenage behaviour.:o
By not texting or talking to him am displaying serious demand avoidance behaviour.
Might be easier to mark the anniversary of `it` on sunday by having some physical interaction with 4x4:rotfl: :rotfl: The man not the car.:rotfl:
Got another camping/trialling trip next weekend but working:mad: Dont tell anyone but might have a family crisis in the midlands and need the weekend off.:o
Love all

This is a great thread. I think many people have issues like the OP brings up, but for some silly reason 'loneliness' is still a taboo.
I have only a few close friends and I'd much more that than have many many distant friends.
I get along with all types of people, but come across as reserved (which isn't a bad thing IMO) and people are quick to judge. I'm a great listener and very empathatic (for a guy) so that generally leads to good friendships with those who give me a chance.
Unlike most people my age I don't drink or go clubbing etc so it's unlikely I'll make lots of friends with colleagues etc but I'm always civil and that's good enough for me.
To all those people who feel lonely...remember you are not alone (in all senses of the term)0 -

Hey I don't like clubbing either! Never did.
Mind you not sure I like sleeping - woke up at 4.40 and couldn't get back to sleep. Guess I'm gonna be in school real early today! The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0 -

Welcome to the thread - this is so good to hear in a good/bad way I guess. It is really great to hear a guy speaking from the heart rather than covering up with bravado. I hope you like the thread and look forward to hearing all about you.
To everyone
I hope this wet rubbish day (aaarrrgg wet play all day!) is not too bad and remember it is the weekend - I am counting down the hours!! I have some nightmare children this year and my god they are hard work! I have the bottle of wine ready and my TV viewing lined up - I feel like a granny at 30 can't do going out on a school night, never could.
Take care all
