"Think of me peeling and chopping about 30 onions and standing there with tears streaming down my face "
You can bake onions in their skins, and when they're cool enough to handle you can skin them and add (with cheese) to baked potatoes, or make a fab soup.
The very simplest is chopped onion in a stock made from boiling water with a teaspoon of Marmite dissolved in it.0 -
Is it possible to freeze freshly cut onions?0
-
Hi Jo,
Yes it is possible. It's best to open freeze them on a tray and then bag them so that they don't stick together.
There's an older thread with lots of tips on freezing onions so I'll merge your thread with it to keep all the suggestions together.

Make sure you seal the bag up well or everything in the freezer will taste of onions. Even ice cream. Still, didn't put my 3 year old off!!0

Hi, I just chop the onions and double bag them (as they can really smell). When needing to use them just hit bag with rolling pin to break off what you need. They are great for cooking but a bit soggy for salads. A long time ago I chopped about 14lbs of onions to freeze - I smelled of onions for days !!! :rotfl:Debt free - Mortgage free - Work free ( in that order

Can you freeze onions. I've bought loads today as on special can you cut them up and put them into the freezer and just take out what you need? do they taste the same?
Thanks in advance0 -
Yes you can. I dice them up and put them in a freezer bag. Just grab a handful when I need them and throw them in.
(I'll skulk back into my lurker corner now:o )0 -
I chop mine (in food processor usually) and bag into roughly 1 onion portions as I got fed up trying to bash off bits of onion when it was a big lump
They are fine to use in cooking, I cook them from frozen. I think if you wanted to use them raw then they may be a bit limp and soggy after defrosting though.
Oh and I double bagged mine as they can make the freezer smellyworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Yup
Just chop 'em and stick them in the freezer. Same with peppers. (I've had standby bags from Iceland for ages - obviously they were purchased frozen, but they're both raw). Proud DFW Nerd 135 :cool:Sealed Pot Challenge - 0190 -
It was such a godsend when I discovered on OS that you can freeze onions,
I chop them up and open freeze them on my pizza tray, then transfer into freezer bag.
Nowadays though I tend to caramalize them before freezing, this can be done easily in the microwave. This method uses a tiny amount of oil compared to cooking on a stove. can be kept in the fridge for a week
