Nonesoperfect...no need to freeze your scallions, start to thin them as soon as they are big enough to use and continue to do that until they are all gone....they will grow at different rates and some of the last ones you pick will have become small onions but will not decay...

  • Just a note about freezing onions. Make sure the bag or container that you put the onions in is sealed well, and also other things in your freezer. I say this as I'm sitting here eating a lovely bowl of chocolate ice cream with a hint of onion....yuck.

I chopped the onions up, bagged them and froze them. The whole freezer smells really badly of raw onion. A home-baked walnut cake had to be chucked as it just tasted of onion.
  • Hi guys
Im a little confused, i was under the impression that onions could not be frozen? Now, having ready through some pretty impressive threads on this board, ive noticed that people batch cook and freeze things which have onion in...so i guess the answer is yes they can be cooked and frozen...but the question is how long can they be frozen for?

    Thanks

You can most definitely freeze onions, both cooked and raw. Whilst not very OS, I admit that I have bought frozen diced onion from Tescos (when I had a 100 mile per day commute and even the time saved chopping an onion was sacred!). Not sure how long it lasts exactly, but at least 3 months I reckon...
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.

Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.

  • Thank you so much rachel, i dont know why i thought you could'nt freeze them! I heard they go sour/pungent

100 mile commute daily  you need a medal never mind frozen onions!:D
  • I had 2 big bags of onions from the farm shop last year about 10lb reduced to 50p. I spent an eye watering day choppping and freezing. I was using them for several months afterwards and they tasted fine.

    Hi NorthernAngel,

There's an earlier thread with lots of tips on freezing onions so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

I make Onion mush from a Nigella Lawson recipe. You slow cook them on the hob in Marsala (or any other rich alcohol). and then freeze in bags. Not strictly OS with the alcohol but they taste great and defrost really quickly so their good to whack in the pan to make a quick sauce with.

    Can I?

I buy a bag of onions each week or two and sometimes end up throwing 2 or 3 away because they are past their best.

If I notice them going soft, can I slice them up and freeze them? I'm sure I can but just wanted to check with you experts!

I chop or slice onions then freeze enough in a sandwich bag to do my meal with, they thaw easily during cooking and I have not noticed any difference.
