I second what you say bartman.

If the poster of #27 is so sceptical about the card, why is he keeping up to date with Pipelines monthly newsletter?

And if the poster of #28 hasn't signed up for the card, what's his problem. If he has, and thinks there's a fiddle going on, then he should unsubscribe himself.

What i can't comprehend is why people think that it's so wrong to query things. I could equally question your naivety.

Martin has included reference to the Pipeline Card in several of his emails and i think it is perfectly legitimate to question what the mailing list is now being used for. I'm sure Martin highlighting the Pipeline Card has resulted in thousands of people signing up - and i don't see why anyone should have to tolerate spam regardless of SCAMmell's daydreams.

    If I'm No 27 - who's no 1?

The simple reason I keep up with details of the card is I want to be proved wrong, and I've posted a few comments in the past on the card. If it takes off and gives what it originally promised I want to be able to say sorry. Equally if it fails to deliver I want to have the opportunity to say I told you so with a smug satisfaction! Either which was I won't be joining! I keep up to date with what's happening with TVRs, but will never own one!

I know of Ben from the original fuel protest days, so am very sceptical ;)

I genuinely would like to thank both RufusA and bs7 for their courtious replies.

bs7 - I may suffer from a lot of faults, but being naive is not one of them. If you're concerned about what people are doing with your details, why don't you ask them? If you're not satisfied with their reply then tell them to remove your details from their records. Voicing your concerns in a forum isn't going to settle your mind. The answer, I'm afraid, lies in your own hands.

RufusA - Firstly, when the fuel protests were taking place I wasn't in the country, so I must bow to your better knowledge on this matter, but I have in mind that at that time Ben Scammell was threatened with prosecution if he continued organising the protest - that says a lot for our freedom of speech and our right to protest - don't you think? If we were a nation that collectively took positive action over things that seriously affected us then we possibly wouldn't be paying the current exorbitant fuel prices. As I see it, at that time the man stood up to be counted - where was everyone else?
I agree with the main part of your reply. What I don't understand is why you would want to express an opinion in somewhere like this forum when the matter hasn't been settled one way or the other.
  • I am replying here on behalf of Pipeline. The offer is a genuine one - it comes straight from the manufacturer and is a closed, time-limited offer for Pipeline members only. That is why it had to go in a members email and not on the site - which would have been preferable.

We checked out both the unit and the price and we couldn't even get close to £239 including VAT, delivery and unlocked European maps

We know that some people don't want to be told about other discounts - but some people do ( and it's a way of offering some money-savings now, while we are waiting to sort the petrol side out. We get offers from compamies all the time - most of them crap or irrelevant. This was a really good one so we sent it on. £60 is a good saving in anybody's book surely.

For the record, Navman did not pay us to send the offer out and had no influence or contril over what we said. We also checked out other units to get a fair comparison. Pipeline is not a company and does not make a profit. It is a membership organisation.

We also don't accept that one offer in six months - that is relevant to motorists - constitutes spam. Fortunately, the majority of members (the ones who read the whole email) understood our motives and were appreciative.

I think everyone needs to calm down and take a deep breath. My concern is not over some poxy sat-nav system it is the length of time he is taking to secure the pipeline discount.

Can you imagine approaching any supplier (doesn't have to be for fuel) and saying " i have 420,000 people who want to buy your product, what discount will you give me "

Now in my book if this deal was going to happen it should have hapened by now, even a poor negotiator could have brokered a deal by now. The thought of guaranteeing a slice of the market should have had suppliers in a bidding war.

My only concern is that if a fuel supplier wanted to give cheaper fuel away, let's say 5p per litre, all they would have to do is drop the price and the forecourt would be nose to tail. Why do they need pipeline? surely just revising their current loyalty card would suffice.

So looking at it logically this scheme has a very slim chance of getting out of the starting block, but while there is a chance I'll stay registered.

I think the main problem will be the actual CARD. The organisation, resources and money required to set up a card would be astronomical. The only way pipeline can do this is to have their partner, be it fuel card company or retailer, create and adminster the card system for them, and I presume this is what's taking the negotiating....

For the whiners and moaners here there is a very very simple solution: Send a blank email to unsubscribe@PipelineCard.org

I did that a couple of months ago. I was filled with enthusiasm when I signed up for the card when it all started. I got weary of the frequent progress reports – which did not report any progress. From reading your posts, I'm glad to see that I've missed out on the most significant ‘progress’ which from the sound of it is SPAM!

Bill's Guide To Saving On Fuel!
If you are worried about saving money then bills guide here it comes. Fill up at tesco every time, use your clubcard, you get vouchers, sell them on ebay, usually get about double your money back, so if your voucher is £5 then you would expect £10 or more, use the money from that to fill up with, cant work out what % that is but its better then no discount!

Other ways to save money on fuel are:

    Avoid hard acceleration and braking
Flow with the traffic - smooth driving can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%. Don’t rest your left foot on the brake of an automatic vehicle - the extra drag increases fuel consumption by 5%.

    Watch your speed
By traveling at 50 mph rather than 70 mph on duel carriage roads you can reduce fuel consumption by 10% or more.

    Lighten your load
Take off roof-racks and bull bars if they’re not needed. Remove golf clubs or tools if you’re not using them – and reduce fuel consumption by up to 5%. Keep your tyre pressure towards the top of the manufacturer’s recommended range.

    Automatics: Switch to 'park'
When stuck in traffic for any length of time turn the key to the “accessory” position (not to “off”) and if an automatic transmission, shift to “park”. Vehicles fitted with engine-off as standard typically reduce fuel consumption in urban areas by up to 15%

    Air Conditioning
When the weather is fine, switch off the air conditioning. This reduces fuel consumption by up to 10%

    Service your car regularly
Blocked air filters can increase fuel consumption significantly.
    Kind Regards
    Bill
