The scam text below has been doing the rounds for some time and it finally found it's way to me.

Phone Pay Plus are not interested as they do not regulate these numbers as they are contolled by OFCOM.

OFCOM, who control these numbers, took details of the message and gave a complaint number. The complaint will be held on file but no action will be taken.

As this is an Unsolicited Promotional Text it comes under the scope of the Information Commisioners Office (The ICO). They have recorded the complaint and will look into the matter. I was informed they have no powers but will contact the sender and tell them that what they are doing is against their rules and regulation. In English it means they will do bug**r all!

My network, T-Mobile, told me that there is nothing they can do or advise. They could not even tell me the cost to call or text the 07500 number.

These are the people that are suppose to look after the mobile phone industry and protect us, the users. And pigs might fly.

These are personal numbers I think - some wombats use them as a single point of contact number but if you call that number, it costs you more - and can be a scam as well. So don't call back.

Ofcom is useless when it comes to complaining about these numbers. I recall making some complaint and got a pretty useless reply pointing me to PhonePayplus - doh I had been there and it points to Ofcom (something like that).
  • Hi my 02 number start with 07500 4 had my contract for over a year and it always came out of my wife inclusive allowance when she called me and she on orange.
  • Thats the number thats been texting me!!!

I rang Vodafone to complain but not much has been done, word of advice, (though others prob already know this) Do not text back saying STOP etc as the messages suggest as apparently these are charged at premium rate.

It's not a premium rate for either phone calls or text messages. But it won't answer if rung.

It's an ordinary number on Vodafone (unless it's been ported).

I spoke to Vodafone customer services about a similar message I had about a month ago; I was clear that I wasn't asking for details of their customer, but that I wanted this illegal use of their network reported internally.

They adamantly refused to do anything, though I did eventually persuade a supervisor to write down a note of the complaint, in case I reported it to the Police as attempted fraud and they then asked the network for more info.

Perhaps someone could contact the Vodafone rep on here.

    Hi Intasun32, Silverback420 and redux.

Just picked this up, apologies for the delay.
I agree it does looks like a Vodafone number. Is anyone still receiving communication from this number now? I believe this may have already been dealt with.

    Best Wishes

    Ben,

Could you add to what you have said above, exactly how has this matter been dealt with? I ask as I am in contact with the ICO who are investigating this matter and any further info would be of help, and would be beneficial to VF.

    Cheers

    Hi Intasun32,

We'd be happy to help in any way we're able to.

Just send us an email using the Contact us form on our website and to make sure in comes through us you'll just need to state the code WRT135 in the subject line and if you could include a link to your thread and your MSE username so we can identify for that'd be great.

    Thanks,

A section of the reply from the ICO, they seem to be interested but what will they do?

From the information you provided, it would appear that the call came from a firm called ‘Storm Data’.

In this case, your complaint does fall under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (the Regulations).

It is the Commissioner’s policy to only take formal action where it seems to him, to be the only way of ensuring compliance with the Regulations and in the great majority of cases, he manages to achieve a satisfactory result without using his formal powers. (In other words do bug**er all!!)

However, our office has received a number of complaints about Storm Data and the matter has been passed to our Regulatory Action Division (RAD), for their consideration

Well reading the above post you would think how 'wonderful' VF are, that they are acting as an understanding network. Think again it's all bullsh*t, see below the answer I received when as requested I contacted them, quoting ref. WRT135.

    Why did they bother to post, perhaps just to try and make themselves look good. Well read for yourselves and see;

    Hi,
Thanks for supplying the extra information.
For security reasons this has been escalated to the correct department to resolve the issue, I'm afraid we can't give out direct information regarding the number or at which stage the process is at due to Data Protection.
Rest assured it's in the correct handsets (?) for a speedy resolution. (What?) If there is anything else in the meantime please let me know.

Why do companies use the 'Data Protection Act' as a way to not give too much information? In most cases it would show how little they are doing.

    Hi Intasun32,

I can assure that we'll help our customers in anyway we can.

As I'd like to take a closer look at this could you post the email reference you would've been given so I can make sure that information has passed to the relevant department.

    Many thanks,

    Lee
