If anyone can clarify for me:

I'm on Click energy 6 dual fuel and i pay by quarterly debit card payment. I submit my readings online, receive a bill for what i've used and i pay it. As i refuse to pay by DD in any way, are my unit prices likely to be higher because of this? Does anyone know please?

No your unit prices wont be higer and if you pay on time you will still get prompt pay discount as well as duel fuel discount (if you got gas and ele which you have) you just wont get direct debit discount(naturally) and you can still go onto the online saver tariff (if you want to), the only thing with cash payments this way is that you can not pay at the post office as there is no slip to take there.

hope that clears it up a bit

Very concise, thank you. I knew about the DD discount and that it won't apply to me but wasn't sure re unit prices per se. Many thanks.

  • Wow, pay each month for your exact usage, what a revolutionary idea. Whatever will BG do next? Send out paper bills each month? Launch a cashback card? :D

I've just taken the plunge and added Energy Smart to my Click Energy 5 account with a variable direct debit.

Me too, and I get a refund of £50+ for the amount that my gas account was in credit. Pay as you Go! You know it makes sense :j:beer:

I'd agree I do have that tendancy (due to my owrking environment I have to absorb the infoamtion quiclyn and repsond and then deal with whatever my boss is throwing at me next.) But this is not one of those time. People have sadly fallen from good marketing and advertising.

Your monthly direct debit will be the same as the tarriff you are on or switch to supports. British Gas do not currently offer variable monthly direct debit.

You payments will be (at best) 1/12th of your approximate annual consumption.

The reference to paying for what you use, relates to the fact your meter readings will be used for billing, so you will have accurate bills and so in theory british gas will be able to make more accurate estimations of your annual consumption to base your fixed payment on.

And as mentioned this has been confirmed by a British Gas Agent -- the horses mouth as it were.

    Oh yes they do!

So there is a choice after all, phew! Fixed direct debit or variable direct debit.

    But which is better?

I'm not switching to this Energy Smart yet, because it puts more pressure on you to enter your usage meter readings every month.

I do enter them regularly (gas and electricity), often twice a month... but I like the option of being lazy if I want to be.

This BG Energy Smart thingy says they'll remind you (via email/text message) to enter your readings every month, but what if I just cba? Or am out of the country.

Is there any penalty if you don't enter them monthly? Do they not bill you for that month?

That is exactly what I asked as I am out of the country quite often, and the answer was that if you don't enter a meter reading, it will be estimated, and then corrected at the next reading. Hope this helps.

Variable obviously, as you only pay for what you use:rolleyes:
