On energy smart you provide your meter readings monthly, via the internet or text message.
You pay either by fixed or variable monthly direct debit.

    Certain tariffs are excluded.

My tariff is included according to one of these threads, so how do I work out if it's going to be a better deal for me please?

What you pay for your fuels won't change.
You get a £40 sign up discount in month 13, if you take dual fuel.
    The energy monitor
    Accurate bills.

Doesn't sound that great to me :undecided think I'll probably stick with what I've got and look out for another deal nearer the time :)

    Thanks :D
  • I am on the Price Guarantee December 2009 tariff. I signed up to EnergySmart, my freebie monitor turned up today, I will give it about another 2 weeks to ensure I don't get caught out by the tariff's leaving fees by leaving before the end of the month, then switch.

Nice little promotional thing, but apart from the energy monitor BG are only doing what they should have been doing all along. If it wasn't for the energy monitor I would not have signed up as my bills are never estimated, I always read the meters, and I request what monthly figure is right based on my own accurate historical readings - not BG's inaccurate guesses.

(I have got the email saved here from BG to say they cannot lock me in past my December 2009 package with EnergySmart just in case they try to be funny when I leave them next month).

Can I ask how long it took to arrive, the reason being a signed up a few weeks ago now and still nothing - not that I'm a techie geek or anything :xmassign:
Started the new centuary £18,000 in debt : July 2008 we're now DEBT FREE (apart from the mortgage!) :j
2011 Update: Taken a car on finance - first serious credit commitment in a long time but as were more financially secure than in the past it was a calculated risk - 4 years and counting ! :)

Just had my first bill through Energy Smart and I'm a bit confused. At the end of the last statement (pre-Energy Smart) I was around £50 in debt on Gas but about £60 in credit on elec. New bill today shows they will take DD for the £50 gas yesterday (just checked bank online and it hasn't been taken) and then showing a further DD for about £45 gas used in the last month to be taken on the 14th Dec. Only used about £15 of elec in the last month so statement just shows a reduced credit balance of £45. No sign of that being credited back to my account. Is this just a very easy way of BG making sure that any money that they are owed is automatically paid promptly while they are still able to keep customers in credit?

I think they'd give you back the £45 for elec if you asked. Alternatively leave it there and effectively use it to pay your first few months of elec.
  • I signed up for Energy Smart last month and supplied my first meter reading on 1 December. The bills were available on 7 December and guess what? They included an estimated meeting reading for 19 November (the day I signed up). I queried this on 8 December and was told they'd rebill me with the actual usage using the readings I'd supplied. They said the bills would be updated overnight, however they failed to say which night. The gas bill's disappeared from my online account page and the electricty bill is unchanged. I've just got off the phone after being promised it would be sorted in 24 hours. (I got them to specify which 24 hours this time). Who wants to lay odds on what I'll find on Saturday morning?
  • Hi I am interested in your comments as I too am coming to the end of price guarantee on 31 December, however as far as I can see there is only one tariff for energy smart and it is a lot more expensive than websaver 5 which I am transfering to...shrewdal

It does seem like a cynical ploy by BG to get people to attract people to take a more expensive tariff by offering a free goodie(monitor) and actual bills.

The irony is that with their cheapest tariff(PP April 2010) the smart tariff is available and yet not with Websaver 5.
