I'm interested in adding the EnergySmart feature on variable monthly so I pay only for what I use.

I am currently £500 in credit for gas and £90 in debit for electric.

From what I've read, it sounds like I won't get refunded the £500 for the gas but this will just be used as a pot so I'll find I don't pay any real money for gas for quite a while.

But I'd have to settle the £90 debit for the electric at the start?

    Is this correct?

No, that is not correct Chris. You will be asked to pay the electricity debit amount by debit or credit card. The credit for your gas payment will be refunded by BACS credit, and you then start a new variable direct debit for Energy Smart. Your fixed DD will be cancelled. If you have any problems with this, my contact at BG is craig.rushworth@britishgas.co.uk He was very helpful.

Thanks for that, even better than I thought then as I'll get the £500 credit back immediately. Would rather have it in my bank than theirs!
