if now millions are going to claim dont you think it will back-fire somewhere?

Of course it will. Charge more for overdrafts, I say! That'll let them pay higher rates of interest for savings. What is this country short of? SAVINGS!!!

My OH and myself used https://www.bankactiongroup.co.uk and we managed to get over £1500 back from HSBC in charges.

Just waiting for me to get out of my overdraft and we will be having a go with my Barclays account next.

It really is worth doing, but don't let it get you down if they seem like they will take you to court, because they cannot risk losing!

Yeah but if it wasn't for people in debt you wouldn't get such high interest on your savings!

Once I've got my money back from the bank I'm coming after you!

I'm just suggesting that this is not the way to run an economy! Those that want the service (overdraft) should pay for it. Those that don't need it shouldn't have to pay for it.

Also, as I've just said, pension funds and other savings are way short of what is needed in this country.

Anyone who's ever studied economics will remember the simple equation SAVINGS = INVESTMENT!

Why is the UK short of investment? Because there is not enough incentive to save. Anything which increases the cost of SPENDING will have an automatic offsetting effect by increasing savings.

I think we all know that and it doesn't take an economics genius to realise it.

Have a look on the DFW board and see what the reasons are for people being in debt. Sure, I'll admit that some people are here as a result of "reckless overspending" (for want of a better phrase) but for many of us, unhappy circumstances and nasty twists in life have got us here.

One thing we all have in common is a willingness to learn and get out of debt.

And then one day we'll all be just like you! ;)
 What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

So the way to run the economy is to allow thieves to take our money? You may not agree with us but the court of law does.

I don't see what pensions have got to do with this at all!

I never studied economics which might explain why I'm in the !!!!!! I am. So seeing as though I never learnt that saying I don't have to remember it!

But thanks for the encouragement and support. I imagine everyone is as grateful to you as I am not!

Perhaps I won't bother to write a letter now. Seems like everyone will be doing the same and I can't see the banks giving everyone various charges back.

Also, HSBC have only recently agreed to my offer of repayment for my loan so I don't really want to go upsetting them.
