Hi everyone, interesting thread! I am definitely going to give this a go! I have dyed black what I can only describe as sort of curly, fluffy hair and straighten it loads. Also can someone give me any info on washing with oil? Ta x

Just tried this on my hair, which is shoulder length, thick, and dyed and highlighted. It feels really smooth and silky, and much less tangled than normal. Used a Sunsilk peach conditioner in a tube.
Looking forward to seeing the long term effects!

  • I tried this a few years ago after being told about it by a girl in college (she told me her hair was naturally very curly and it would go very fuzzy and dry if she used shampoo so only used conditioner) . At the time I bleached and straightenedmy hair alot and it was pretty dry and damaged so I decided to give it a try. My hair felt alot softer after the first time. However I stopped doing it after about a week as I didn't like the feeling it gave my scalp.

I'm transitioning to CO. I've been doing it for two months now with some shampooing now and again, until my scalp gets used to the idea of producing less sebum (I was pretty greasy before). I'm now down to a shampoo every 10 days or so.

I've used Tesco Value and Asda Smartprice conditioner (they're identical, the only difference is that Tesco's is in an opaque bottle and Asda's is in a white bottle). I like these a lot, the size and price of them meant I could put a LOT on my length and not worry about the cost and the smell wasn't overpowering. I DON'T recommend the shampoos though, they're weirdly runny and gloopy, heavily perfumed and the smell didn't rinse out well.

I then moved to Tesco's cheap coconut conditioner, I also got the shampoo which I'm much happier with. There are other scents too, so look out for them if coconut isn't your thing. I think I saw jojoba in Asda in the same bottles so I may give that a try once I'm done with the coconut stuff.

Whatever conditioner you use, it's important to get ones without silicones in them (dimethicone, simethicone) because you need to use shampoo to get them out, otherwise they'd build up and leave your hair looking and feeling horrible.

One last thing I'd say is, don't tell anyone you're intending to do it, tell them after you've done it a few times. The people I told beforehand seemed to think the idea was offensive, but the people who didn't know started complimenting me on my hair!

Haha. Yes good tip. When I told my sister she did recoil and pull a face, even though she'd just said how nice my hair looked. When we have been taught to shampoo our hair since being very young (and sometimes told to shampoo twice) its a weird thing to get your head round.

I'm looking forward to trying the value conditioners, even more savings!

Well I woke this morning with my hair clean, apart from having messy hair it looked just the same as yesterday, no need to wash again:Tthank goodness, I gave it a quick blowdry to put a bit of shape back into it and I love it, although I will probably wash it tomorrow I will be interested to see if it actually needs it, if it doesn't then this will be a first and I will have to retrain my thinking on hair washing, I'm popping to Tesco later, shall I get the coconut one or the value one? Oh, the choices:rolleyes:I could splash out and get both:rotfl:I couldn't possibly stop colouring my hair, I do it once every 4 weeks so that will be my time to have a shampoo wash and start again, doing this and the OCM has made me think that the whole of the beauty business is just one huge con, I knew this anyway having worked in this industry but now I'm actually proving it, I'm not sure if I am pleased to be proving myself right or annoyed because I've wasted so much time, effort and money being conned:rolleyes:

Could it be that you might need to rinse more? or did your conditioner have some sort of silicone in it, I think the tube ones are slightly thicker:confused:just a guess I'm as new to this as you;)

  • This method of washing hair without shampoo has been around for years,
I first came across this when trying to find a solution for my daughters hair as they are both Mixed race with the thickness of my hair and the texture of their African American father.
This method has been named as " No poo" (shampoo) it dosen't strip the hair of important oils and helps to tame and condition, it has been a godsend for me and this week alone my daughter has come home from school telling me that a lot of her friends are now only using conditioner to wash and shampoo once in a while, I am glad it is catching on here and also feel that a lot of people similar to myself with Mixed race children or people with dry frizzy hard to manage hair can benefit from this, I also use cholesteral or hair mayo on my daughters hair twice per month and it has really helped, another tip is when the conditioner is on get a shower cap over it and a hot towel, this really works wonders...

I don't really know as I've never had any scalp problems in the whole 4 weeks. In fact my scalp is better than it was. So had a quick google and came across this that might be of some help. It may be that you are either not rinsing it off for long enough or are not leaving it on for long enough. Are you using enough? You have to really saturate the hair and treat it like shampoo by massaging into the scalp then running it through to the ends hth
