Yeah - as explained, you can have a bit of trouble "getting used to it", but actually your hair doesn't need shampoo to be cleaned properly. Mine certainly isn't dirty or greasy ever any more.

One trick I very occasionally use (if you've got something in your hair, or for whatever reason feel the need for a more intense clean) is bicarbonate of soda - mix a small amount into a paste and rub it into your scalp, and it really does clean without damaging your hair. It does need a thorough rinsing out though, otherwise your hair can feel a bit stiff.

    Other benefits I've realised (aside from healthy hair and major moneysaving): I've always suffered a patch of exzema on the back of my head and have been treating it with ointment since I was 12 years old... switching away from shampoo has almost completely cleared it up;

also, I travel a lot and now, rather than using whatever rubbish hotel toiletries are around (or carting it all about), I just need to take three little glass bottles with me: one contains bicarbonate of soda, the second contains apple cider vinegar, and the third contains a mixture of castor oil and olive oil (for the "oil cleansing method" for my skin). Bicarbonate of soda doubles as a gentle toothpaste, and the oil doubles as a moisturiser anywhere on my body.

interesting post! Every morning I spritz my hair with diluted conditioner in water to keep the curls, and just wash it once a week. I wonder how long I can go without washing it?!

I've been doing this for about 2 or 3 years now. I've got very curly, coarse hair and it's worked a treat. I read about it in a book for curly haired women (I think it was called Curly Girls or something like that).

You need to be careful to massage the conditioner into the hair and scalp, as you would shampoo, this then encourages the natural oils.

I've found that my hair is in much better condition now and far less frizzy. Strangely enough (as the OP states their curl has relaxed) I find that my curl keeps more, it used to get to a certain length and then start to drop, but now the curl is tighter and more defined.

I'd definitely recommend it for those with similar hair to me, but I don't know whether it would work on thinner hair.

Do you clarify at all? I have read that some people who do CO need to clarify their hair with shampoo once a month. Just wondered if my hair feels good whether its necessary.

I did give it a little go for moneysaving reasons, but I really didn't feel my scalp was getting clean and after a couple of days (sorry if this is TMI) if I rubbed my fingers on my scalp, it smelt a bit greasy/not fresh IYKWIM and I have normal hair and scalp. This did put me off, I'm afraid. How do you get around this?

I'm used to washing my hair every night as I work in a food environment and cooking smells cling to my hair , so I've reverted to one small application of shampoo.

You see this is what I thought would happen with me, but (honestly) it is very clean. I have always washed my hair everyday as I like that just washed feeling in a morning.

I'm still a beginner at this but I imagine that you didn't massage into the scalp or didn't leave it on long enough. You also have to use more than you would normally, so its saturated. HTH

Well I'd be really interested to know your results. Like I said, I noticed a difference first wash, so if it doesn't agree with your hair you could always give it a quick shampoo. Its not something you have to persevere with (as far as I know)

I wash my hair with the conditioner every morning and its just like freshly washed hair, but softer and more relaxed (the frizz has almost disappeared). I haven't had a greasy day yet. I think it works on the same principle as the oil cleansing method in that oil cleanses oil. I think its the glycerin that has some cleansing abilities. Its not like giving up washing your hair where you have to put up with grease for a few months until it starts working.

It looked great from day one, so its worth a try. I was expecting getting towards the end of the week for it to start looking lank, but it looked really good so I just kept going.

When I looked into it I noticed that a lot of websites that discussed CO method were for black hair. Mine is quite thick and coarse with a bit of curl, so I would imagine its not suitable for thin hair. But I would be interested to know other peoples experiences.

Defo going to give this a try. Like you my hair has been weakened by straightening and hair dye. I have previously worried it might look greasy, but apparently not!!
Also like the idea of losing a bit of the curl so not as muich straightening!!
Thanks, I am going to start tomorrow morning!! :D
