I do this about twice a week (I have to wash my hair every day as I go to the gym most days and my hair gets covered in sweat!) I do notice a differnce- I guess its just me, but I can't do it for more then a day, if I do two days in a row, my hair is sort of duller and gets itchy at the bottom of my scalp! I have very very dry hair, so you'd think it would work, but guess I'm not using the right conditioner...

Just to note- I read somewhere that Coconut is a natural cleanser (I think it read as an anti-bac cleanser but not 100% on that so will just stick to mentioning it as a cleaner) so this could be why those using the Tesco Coconut conditioner are getting on so well!

I do have to use alot of leave in products after I've cleaned my hair though- the temperature of the showers in the gym, the hair driers, the air con and constant temperature changes on and off public transport reek havok on my hair- maybe this is another reason why my hair does seem to need to be properly cleaned when I wash?

I've been doing it for over a year. I have longish straight thick greying hair. It's in the most fab condition. I use very cheap conditioner which cleans the hair gently but thoroughly. Massage well into the scalp to clean the skin, comb through gently but rinse very thoroughly - last rinse under the cold tap for squeaky clean.

I often rub a small amount of coconut oil into my hands & rub onto my hair when it's dry & the hair is glossy & soft.

For those greying people, the best thing is that those coarse grey hairs lie down & don't stick up over the head at weird angles as per a shampoo wash.

Definitely worth a try. I'll never go back to shampoo.

I did give it a little go for moneysaving reasons, but I really didn't feel my scalp was getting clean and after a couple of days (sorry if this is TMI) if I rubbed my fingers on my scalp, it smelt a bit greasy/not fresh IYKWIM and I have normal hair and scalp. This did put me off, I'm afraid. How do you get around this?

I'm used to washing my hair every night as I work in a food environment and cooking smells cling to my hair , so I've reverted to one small application of shampoo.

Bronnie, as I have lots animals to clear out I do find the stench clinchs to my hair, and I don't care to smell of stable! I have found cutting down shampooing, rather than true CO washing is the key for me. I also find my scalp suffers. To get over this I use a cheap minty/tea tree conditioner to help with the feeling fresh, then used a more conditioning conditioner. I also find I still need to use conditioning treatments etc, but I'm saving a little on shampoo.

I haave very curly hair too, and tbh, can't get more then two weeks without feeling I need a shampoo. I c/o wash every day or second day though, and it has improved my hair. My hairdressor also has curly hair and she reckons two weeks is the maximum people with serious curls should be washing. I also often leave a normal (not leave in) conditioner in my hair, because I'm outside a lot in harsh weather and I thinkit protects it a little.

I couldn't wait to post on here this morning, I found a bottle of Boots Essentials super cheap conditioner and gave this method a go today, I am shocked at the results, my hair this morning was filthy, I couldn't of gone out with it like that but I used the conditioner at the start of my shower and left it in whilst doing my other bits and pieces, so about 10 mins, I forgot to comb it through but rinsed throughly and I cant believe how well my hair has turned out, its spotless, silky and feels kind of light:DI blow dryed it, making it straighter rather than super straight because I have a stupid fringe I cut in a while back when I was hormonal so I need to sort that out and it took so much less time and my hair just looks great, even my dd said your hair looks nice with no prompting:rotfl:I shall see how it lasts through the day and if I can get tomorrow out of it as well and I shall report back, one small and silly complaint, I wear clip in extensions every day and I couldn't get them to stay in cos my hairs so slinky:) but a bit of back combing soon sorted that, I am feeling super money saving today as I also used the Boots conditioner to shave my legs etc so had a very cheap shower this morning, thanks again OP:)
Thank you for this site Martin

Glad it worked for Glowgirl. I do what you have done every morning, so my hair hasn't had chance to get dirty or greasy. I was expecting to have to shampoo once a week but its just not come to that yet. I have cut back on pretty much all products (except a coconut serum which I've just discovered has silicones in so I 'm thinking I might wean myself off that as I just use it on my ends).

You described your hair as being "light" thats the word I would use for my hair too.

Thanks jennie. What you say about coconut is really interesting as I have been using a coconut shampoo, albeit a very cheap one. I'm going to experiment with some cheaper "value" conditioners and see if the coconut is better. Thanks for the information.

I originally tried it as I was using up my toiletries stash and I ran out of shampoo and have several half-used conditioners left. I'm was really only considering it from the money-saving perspective as I have no problems with my hair and I'm still not sure therefore whether I'm actually going to save money, as I'll be using more conditioner, albeit cheap, than I would shampoo.

I like the mint/teatree idea and afraid coconut is one of the scents I least like to smell of!!

However, it has just occurred to me that it might help preserve my colour and prevent fade. My colour is dark and redone at the roots every 3 weeks:eek:. Since I've been growing my hair after years of having it short, this could be a reason! Presume it would help prevent colour fade.
Glad it's working so well for you all!!

Bronnie, I have read this somewhere too about it helping retain colour. i suppose shampoo will strip colour from hair so that makes sense. It would be interesting if someone has noticed that it helps with colour as that could be another money saving angle I hadn't thought of ;).

  • Hi guys i have afro hair and only use the tesco coconut conditioner like flippin. I leave it in overnight once a week (showercap) or for about an hour and then rinse it out.
My hair has had no issues with dryness, flaky scalp or anything since i started 2 years ago. only thing is i have to use anti-dandruff after i get cornrows done because my scalp does not take kindly to being exposed to the elements.
Only thing is i add olive/coconut or jojoba oil (about 30mls) to the condiditioner though to give it a boost.
i have tried the jojoba conditioner from Co-op and the effects were horrendous! Took a month of overnight conditionig to correct!
