We had a hard drive go wrong after about 3 months and took it to the retailer(not comet) who were adamant it was the manufacturers responsibility. We went to the website and discovered they would only repair or replace if we sent it back to them in Malaysia at our own expense so we wrote to the head office of the retailer pointing this out and were told their salesman was wrong and to take it to the shop and they will have the replacement ready when you get there.

I know Comet (and PCW and Curry's) get slated a lot, but I bought an E-machines (now Acer) computer from Comet a couple of years ago. It went wrong after a month or so but Comet's handling of the problem was excellent - after I had been served badly by the manufacturer's repair department.

I rang the manufacturer's helpline and they arranged to collect it and put it right. It was collected next day. Marvellous service, I thought.

Three week's later I was still waiting for it to be returned. The problem was that the hard-drive had gone wrong and they didn't have a replacement in stock and were waiting for them to come in. I could have bought one off the shelf at any decent computer shop.

I went back to Comet with my tale of woe, who sorted it in two hours by getting me a full refund which I used to buy a different brand of computer. Comet told me I should have gone back to them first.

I realised then, I should have done what my instinct told me and gone back to the retailer. It's just that I thought by contacting the manufacturer I would get better service than from Comet. I bet they had hard drives available off the shelf!
  • Why do people have such a problem with dealing with the manufacturer? I'd rather deal with people who know what they're talking about.

Seems like people argue for the sake of arguing.

Sometimes the manufacturer isn't in the UK...
  • Why on earth would you actually ask a sales guy what would happen to somethign if it broke within a year? The poor people dont get paid enough as it is without having to deal with a smart !!!! pair of old people testing them out.

They only pass on the info that they are told by their bosses, so no wonder he went all red with embarassment. poor lad bet youo the old gits never even wanted a photo frame in the first place.

I think it quite pertinent to ask such a question, it give you an idea whether or not the company are prepared to fulfill their obligations, in such circumstances as the op it's a good indicator that they won't and perhaps a warning to purchase elsewhere.

But they quite clearly knew the answer so why even bother asking? It was just to create an argument for absolutely no reason.
