Woman put a Comet employee in his place.

Thought I'd post something that made me smile today.

Was just browsing in Comet at all the new electricals, there were a middle-aged couple looking at some new digital photo frames that had just come in. All fairly normal.

The bloke then asked the Comet guy what would happen if it broke within the 1st year.

Comet guy said "Well, you'd have to write off to the manufacturer then and get them to sort it out"

At which point woman, who had been quiet until this point said, "Oh come on now don't start that its a bloody old wives tale. We've bought the thing from you so its up to you to sort it out if it goes wrong"

Comet guy "Well umm, nope its the manufacturer"

Woman "No, its you"

Comet guy "It might be, not sure"

Woman "Look, lets stop this now, I'm telling you that its up to you to sort it"

Comet guy is silent and just goes red with an embarrassed smile on his face.

I walked over and as I passed I said "You are right you know"

"Yes" she said, "they are all the same these big shops they try and fob you off but half the time they havn't got a clue"

  • Why do people have such a problem with dealing with the manufacturer? I'd rather deal with people who know what they're talking about.

Seems like people argue for the sake of arguing.
  • Mainly because its a case of the seller fobbing off the client and nt wanting to sort out a problem that is legally theirs. Why blame the manufacturer, the stock belongs to the seller so its up to him to sort out a problem with something of his that he sold.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Because you may not necessarily be covered by the terms of the warranty. And although manufacturers can sometimes be easier to deal with I'm afraid that's not always the case and can just as likely be far worse.

I used to work for Comet years ago when I was a student, they only make money on insurances and credit which is why the salesman are given commision everytime they sell some. They are all a con and this is a case of the salesman bending the truth in preperation to him offering his instant replacment cover for only £19.99 3 years. My opinion is that if something needs to be sold to you then it generally isn't worth having.

I had one customer state that my business had to replace a faulty item and was adamant that they were in their rights - they wouldn't even phone the manufacturer to request a replacement.

I agreed to take them back. When they came back, we just refunded in full. Legally acceptable since SOGA states "refund or replacement" - it doesn't give the consumer a choice as to which, the business decides.

The goods which we had sold for £150 were now costing resellers about £250 since the manufacturers offer had ended. They never bought a replacement from us, but they would have been better going to the manufacturer who have a dedicated line for consumers and have a next day replacement guarantee!!!

Legally, yes, the retailer is responsible, but it can work out better to go to the manufacturer in some cases. It depends if the manufacturer has a dedicated customer returns department.

These days whenever I get asked at the till if I want to buy the extended cover I usually answer with:

"Why? Do they have a habit of breaking down? Maybe I should leave it then...."

    They don't usually ask again.....

But surely the couple were asking a question that they already knew the answer to just to make a point. Why would they do that?

Yep, put them in a room with sofware engineers and leave the agenda in the middle.

Leave for a considerably period of time.

They'll still be discussing where the agenda is!

Just to note this has changed. I worked there about 2 years ago and while I was there they changed the rulings. You no longer got commission on insurance and credit. In fact they got rid of commission but everyone got a % based bonus depending on how well the store met their sale targets and how well they met their own individual targets.
