Looks like we can all charge them a £2 a day unauthorised OD fee :P

They do it to us, lets do it to them.

Exact words from them - The inter-bank payments system is down and it is not just HBOS that is affected. Also any charges incurred by going over o/d limits today because you can't get into your account will not be refunded. Lovely.
    My guess:

    1) For much of the day I would hazard a guess that branch staff had no real explanation about what was going on beyond "systems failure".

    2) I doubt very much that the organisation has issued an instruction about refusing to refund bank charges as a result of the problem. Indeed, I would expect their existing policy to cover "Halifax error" and already allow a refund of charges in such circumstances.

As well as being a pain in the butt for customers I suspect it has been a hell of a tough day for Halifax/Bank of Scotland branch staff. I hope they get to relax in what's left of the weekend.

I was told of a problem with LINK system this morning. If you went to a Nationwide machine to take money out of a Halifax account you wouldn't get any money as the bit that checks the balance in your Halifax account isn't working but if you have a Nationwide account you could get cash from a Nationwide ATM as it doesn't use the LINK system to chack the balance. Soundslike you've got more chance of getting money if you use your own bank. Halifax customer go to Halifax machines etc..

There is nothing wrong with the LINK system. It is Halifax's own system that is down. No Halifax or Bank of Scotland ATMs are currently working. Halifax customers can't use any other bank's ATMs either. But any other bank can use any other bank's ATMs - that is still working.

I used my debit card in Asda this morning. Supervisor came over when it was declined and allowed the transaction to be processed offline (i.e. without auth code). Card was also declined at railway station but worked on train manager's Avantix machine (which again processes cards offline).

When I rang HBOS I was told that a major power line had been cut though.
  • I now get the login screen but when I input username & password the blue progress bar goes about a third of the way across then stops.
