  • Well I am in Yorkshire, so perhaps I was more affected than others?
In my mind the bit part reporting and lack of information from the source on a whole is completely disgusting. Why wasn't this released at 9 am when everyone in HBOS decision tree found out about it.
The last part bobblebob -- for me and others is very wrong.

Bank ATMs Hit By Computer Failure

All Halifax and Royal Bank of Scotland ATM machines have gone down because of a computer failure.

The hole-in-the-walls were affected early this morning after a power cut hit an IT centre in Yorkshire, an HBOS spokesman said.
The machines are expected to come back online this afternoon.
An HBOS statement said: "Due to external power disruption in Yorkshire, which has impacted one of our IT centres there, some Halifax and Bank of Scotland systems have been affected this morning.
"Power has now been restored to the centre via our back up generators.
"We are currently in the process of getting services back to normal. Our branches are open to support customers as usual. We apologise to customers for the disruption and inconvenience this has caused."
HBOS said card transactions were not affected

Im sure RBS will be estatic at Sky's accuracy

    In all likiehood because;

It will have taken time to discover the fault
the limited IT cover will have taken time to diagnose the fault
More IT will have been called in to try and repair it
It will then have been reported up the IT channels of the problems
People will have been called in to discuss the issues and reaction
Branch strategy etc will have been more important than a statement.

In the real world things take time due to hierachies

I can't believe something as important as a banking system does not have failsafe back ups for power cuts! To say I am sat here with steam coming out of my ears is an understatement! Particually having spoken to the nice call centre operative this morning who was nothing but antagonistic! I know it's not their fault but you don't handle irate customers in the way he did! It's not beyond the capabilities to ensure if one system fails another steps into it's place! Perhaps if they spent less money on bonuses and more on IT we wouldn't be left without access to OUR money! This is the final straw with Halifax now. Off to close our account and take our business somewhere else! The mattress is looking mighty tempting at the moment because at least it won't be asking for hundreds of thousands of pounds in bonuses and not releasing my money when the leccy fails!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

No its to minimise downtime and data loss

Whats the difference between a banks backup systems and others? For example my ISP suffered a power outage in one of its data centres a few months back. The backup kicked in and i was back online shortly after

A customer shouldn't need to know anything about the inner workings of any bank, the system should work .. end of.

What would happen if the power failed at a hospital? .. the back up generators would kick in immediately.

If it was a power cut that is causing today's problems - I agree with Becs..

HBOS would/should have had backup generators on standby at their data centre which should have kicked in immediately their systems automatically detected a power failure - as should all proper data centres - though sometimes you can have unexpected problems with these failing to work.

I am thus more suprised that it sounds as if HBoS does not have a 2nd data centre (at a different geographic location) as a fall over/backup to come into operation in case of any such issues or some sort of national disaster - which you would expect for something as system critical as this.

I know HSBC with whom I keep my main bank account have this sort of set-up..

If its a really critical operation the system runs on generators and uses the mains supply as a backup.
