Alternatively if you want a colour phone, I have a couple of these lying about (new & boxed) for about the same money, but they are locked to Orange.

hes starting high school in sept so i would like to get him his first mobile phone in case of emergencies.
whats the best deals around, needs to be cheap incase its lost/stolen.0 -
For the absolute cheapest deal, easymobile have the Nokia 1101 for £30, but it comes with £30 airtime, so the phone is free.
Even better, join quidco, then click through to easymobile, to get £15 cashback. That way, you are getting the phone free and £15 airtime free!koru0 -
i would recommend easy mobile. You can choose your number, top up easily online, get free online itemised billing and their rates are cheap. Best of all, if your daughters friend's have easymobile then its 3p per minfor calls and 1 p for texts.
I would also recommend getting a local PAYG sim in Germany. Most overseas payg simshave some credit included. Your daughter can use the credits to text you. You then know when to call her using the cheapest call checker from this website.
hope this helps.:cool2: if a fly falls in your drink. pick it out, lick it then chuck it. every little helps :beer:0 -
Hello all
I need some advice re a mobile phone and tariffs I am looking for a basic phone and pay as you go payments. The phone would only be used in emergency’s such as brake downs, that’s the car not me I hope. My question is this what is the best set up for this situation I.E very low usage. If there is anybody with some experience in the black arts and could take the time to help me with some advice re this matter I would appreciate it.
Many Thanks

If it really is very low usage then you're certainly correct that pay as you go (PAYG) is the best bet. Further than that I can't assist you with tariffs as I have only ever had a contract phone, my advice is in relation to the handset.
When usage is as low as you suggest (I'm assuming you don't break down too often) then arguably the cost of the mobile phone itself becomes of more concern than the cost of the calls, it is all very well getting very small cost per minute of call but if you've paid through the nose for the phone in the first place then the saving is outweighed by your initial outlay.
Many of the networks provide cheap PAYG deals so shop about but remember not to only consider the tariff, the cost of the phone is important too.MFW 2010 - No. 151 - £583.39 of £9,000 OP Target (£540 so far for February 2010)0 -

Not a good idea for very low users due to their charging structure. From their T&C
"Keeping your number active 75p
We apply a small monthly charge of 75p to your account until your spend exceeds £5 in a 3 month month period. This small charge helps us to cover our administrative costs to ensure we can continue to provide you with the great service as and when you chose to use your easyMobile SIM Card."
A Virgin Payg phone might be better as they dont enforce min use .PF.0 -
Also consider Tesco Mobile. Either the 'Value' tarrif which gives low call charges or the 'Normal' tarrif which gives you cheap calls and texts to three favourite numbers.pricefighter wrote:A Virgin Payg phone might be better as they dont enforce min use .
Top up on-line or in-store and also get Clubcard points. 40p / minute roaming in most of Europe as well, which is very reasonable.
