Your not an undertaker by any chance ?

Why do you think that 500 odd quid for the work is not a rip off

Thats where the RIP on the stone comes from then !!!!!!

    That would be a Rip-on, not a rip-off. :rotfl:

Seriously, isn't this getting a bit out of hand?

A number of people have asked the OP which part of the bill he thinks is a rip-off.
Can this be moved forward at all without that info?
Unless someone with relevant knowledge (instead of speculation) can enlighten us.

So take off the near £60 which is a council charge and you paid what £470 for 14 words, labour, transport to and from the site and for it to be put back.

Someone earlier mentioned that it cost them £2.65 per letter (a fair while ago so this is bound to have increased in cost), so how many letters were in your 14 words?
Did the previous lettering get any touching up/reguilding etc?
How many hours of work do you think it would take a well trained stone mason to do the work?
What would you say are reasonable transport costs and costs of paying two people to collect and reinstate the stone later (these things are heavy and I would be shocked if you are allowed to do this alone)?
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

I would imagine the council has covered their back somewhere in their docs on the tinterweb.

You can bet ya bottom dollar that the cemetary now has terms and conditions when buying a plot..

Seems silly , but the upkeep of the cemetary dont come free and the "plot" you buy needs upkeeping as I myself would not find it nice if the grass around the grave was overgrown or the memorial garden wasnt pretty..

As for making money out of the dead.. Isnt that what funeral directors do?

Perhaps the post should be left to REST IN PEACE.

Lame atempt at humour there

I can't say that £500 is a rip off as I don't know what the breakdown of the costs are (neither do you by the sounds of it, you just think it sounds a lot!!)
So you shouldn't come on here shouting rip off when you have no idea if it is or not. Just out of curiosity what do you suggest is a "fair" price?

bearing in mind the stone carving insignia type thing would have to be done by a stone mason .. You dont want the stone dropped so they may lift it with specialist equiptment . I would gladly pay that if it meant it was quality work with carefullness , and to add all the time and effort the stone mason put in .. Id say it was a bargin..

Well maybe you shouldn't have given it large with all the verbals earlier on, should you?

Quit while you're behind, treacle - I'm having fun now and I've all day to play......

Makes you wonder what a New Headstone and wording would cost.

I had a quick look on the internet at a few websites during my lunch and found brand new, 2'6" headstones, with anywhere from 75-120 letters for approx £450 - £800. That included delivery and fixing.
