If you are not, what exactly does calling someone "to dense", actually do to enhance your point of view ?

I was trying to be polite, I could have said Thick.

    "to dense"? :)

Delightful - well done there, you've really put me in my intellectual place.

    :T:rotfl::rotfl:

  • I have just recieved the bill from the Co-operative funeralcare for removing my fathers headstone in order to have my late mums details added (14 words) the cost £535.56) £59 Of that goes to Lewisham council for their permission to do so, what a right rip off.

So what is the "rip off", the £535 or the £59?

Lets knock off a few more quid for VAT and say the stonemasons get all that remains (assume the co-op takes nothing) - that gives them about £415. That has to cover salaries, materials, equipment, and overheads (things like lease/rent, utility bills, business rates and getting an accountant in to do the books at the end of the financial year).

A starting salary for stone mason is going to be around £10-15k, an experienced stone mason probably isn't going to earn over £30k a year. Hardly a lot for a job that takes years of training.

Most people know very little about the realities of running a small company...

I am not in doubt, but the cost does seem overpriced and if anyone feels that this price is 'reasonable' What price would they consider to be expensive, or a rip off ?

Why do you think it's overpriced?

Do you have huge experience in this field yourself?

Are you familiar with legal requirements - and the costs thereby incurred - for such operations regarding memorial stones erected in public places for which the council's liable?

Are you - in the final analysis - making anything more than a knee-jerk "I don't know how much it should actually cost but I know I don't like the look of that price!!!" reaction from a position of near-total ignorance of pretty much every consideration touched upon here?

If you'd be able to clarify for me, I'd really appreciate it.

Oh, and if you could keep it as simple as possible - after all, some of us are, as you've already pointed out, "to dense" [sic] to understand all but the most obviously and simply explained concepts - it would be really useful.

    Thanks in advance! :)
  • I do not think the COOP is a small company. Anyway after all the costs have been taken care of, it still seems a big mark up.

Bit like garages who charge £80 an hour or more. Does the mechanic get paid this much an hour. Of course not, if they get 10-15 quid an hour they will be lucky. Certain trades be it garages or undertakers seem to charge what they like, or what they can get away with.

So I take it from that statement you know what all the costs incurred are?
No didn't think so, this is all based on your opinion and not on fact.
Simple fact of the matter is, if you get a price before you get the work done and you think it's too high, then go elsewhere...

It seems to be all trades and businesses to be honest, we seem now to live in a world where its okay to get as much money out of as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time.

It makes me sad to see so much greed.

You tell me as you seem to know. But I still bet they are making a very good profit.
