When I think of the times I have lost cash, and never had it handed in, I would always put it in my pocket and give it to one of the charity collectors who appear like mushrooms every Saturday. The only time I found something worth handing in was someone's stolen handbag, which the thief must have dropped as it still had the cash and credit cards inside. I telephoned the woman (her details were inside the bag and she was very pleased and said thank with a bottle of champagne. In this case the worker shoud definitely have been reported.

  • I would complain. If the assistant who is paid to work there can pocket the money, then I as a customer can pocket the money for shopping there! I would've handed the money in thinking that the shop assistant would do the right thing (as I have just done by handing the money in that doesn't belong to me) and therefore the assistant has less right to pocket the money than I have!

I would definitely report it. I worked for M&S a while back and policy was clear. Customer money put in the pocket was treated as theft. They even had ocassional searches of staff on the shopfloor. Staff weren't allowed to carry our own money on the shopfloor to ensure that both staff and customers were protected. I imagine most other good retailers would have similar rules.

It doesn't matter if it was a rich businessman or a little old lady who left the money. Both are morally entitled to receive their money back.

I've often been struck by how many people are incredibly honest and will go out of their way to do the decent thing but anyone suggesting 'split the money with him' or 'finders keepers' is essentially suggesting theft as well.

If this staff member pocketed the cash, what sort of other shenaningans could they get up to? However, perhaps the store did allow staff to pop a note into their pocket before handing it in. In which case, reporting it to a manager would not be a problem and would avoid potential confrontation or accusations of theft. But it would be up to a manager to decide.

I'd have gone over, asked for it back and said I was going to hand it in to customer services myself .....

Did this on London Underground - handed in a tenner to a ticket collector - friends were calling me a muppet as he was bound to pocket it. I like to think to this day he had similar morals and it either went to charity, or the owner got it back.

    Karma ....
  • Right i work in WHSmith and personally... Id either tell the customer to keep it or pocket it myself, however this is because WHSmith has stung us over this situation.

When i was a fresh faced young part time worker i found a fiver on the floor and done the exact same as most here would. I handed it in to my supervisor who promptly told me to "put it in the till". Recently ive seen a colleague find £20 and have to put it in her till with no effort made to find the owner or donate to charity...

The way i see it is. Does WHSmith really deserve or need that money that isn't theirs anymore than said customer or my £5.23 an hour wages?

Having worked in a shop it's not right to put it back in the till because you would be in trouble (surprisingly) for being over, and there are no tills at the self serve!!! I certainly wouldn't jump to conclusions that it was theft as I assume they need to man the area at all times, so could be handing the money in later. Personally i would have handed it in to customer services.
  • Definitely complain.

In fact, just this morning, I collected £10 I found in Tesco. I handed it in (OH called me a mug) and was given a receipt and told to come back after a specified amount of time. I'm now £10 better off and my conscience is clear.

That's because most people are resigned to the fact they'll never see their £10 again and so never bother to try and chase it up. The self service checkouts I use tend to beep and flash in the note dispenser to remind you you've a note/notes there.
  • In handing over this money it should be their for the looser to reclaim.
This assistant is being dishonest and should be sacked.

Every where else i've worked thats the case but unfortunatly this WHSmith's managerial team just don't seem to work that way.

Didn't even realise id slightly strayed off the hypothetical storyline... Whoops!

Personally i think a quiet word with the employee in question and then use your own intuition to see whether you think its necessary to take it to a higher up afterwards.
  • Damn right he should complain. Its disgusting and dishonest to pocket the money. If everyone was honest we wouldnt be in the 'selfish everyman for himself' society we are in now.
