Should Ricky kick off about pocketed cash?

I'm amazed at the number of hypocrites there are on here. People who say they would complain 'because they could have spent it themselves'.
In this situation I would have handed it in at customers services myself. I think it's unfair to hand over the responsibility to someone who is almost certainly busy if they supervising the self service tills. As someone else mentioned, there isn't anywhere to store money at self-service.
If I had let myself get into this situation by handing the money over to the staff member, I would have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Whilst I would never put the money in my pocket for storage, I have worked with plenty of good people who would do so and never think of the implications. I've seen good people lose their jobs because they didn't have the foresight not to do something silly like that.
I also think Ricky could be seen as a bit lazy since nearly every store that has self-service tills will have them as close as possible to customer services. This is a deliberate design feature as it allows customer service staff to reach the self-service tills quickly if there's a problem.0 -
My son found £20 on the floor in Tesco about 12 years ago and we went to hand it in especially since it seemed likely that a pensioner may have dropped it. Customer Services were just going to take it but I suggested that they take the wee lad's details and pass it on to the police if nobody came back for it. The woman didn't seem pleased (never liked her anyway!) and several months later the police 'phoned to say that it hadn't been claimed and that it was now avalable for my son to collect.
A really good lesson in honesty for my two boys and a reward to boot.:T
btw I would definitely say something like "Oh, you've put the wrong thing in your pocket. Thought I'd better point it out as you'd get so embarrassed later on!" Just becuse someone is not very well paid is no excuse for dishonesty and the person who left it may well have been really badly off. Most people would go back and hope that it had been handed in.
I've been in the position where I've been sooo grateful for someone doing the right thing ... handing in my credit card when I left it in the petrol pump slot, and someone finding my son's camera on a tram in the middle of Amsterdam!:j0 -
I would definitely report it. I worked for M&S a while back and policy was clear. Customer money put in the pocket was treated as theft. They even had ocassional searches of staff on the shopfloor. Staff weren't allowed to carry our own money on the shopfloor to ensure that both staff and customers were protected. I imagine most other good retailers would have similar rules.
It doesn't matter if it was a rich businessman or a little old lady who left the money. Both are morally entitled to receive their money back.
I've often been struck by how many people are incredibly honest and will go out of their way to do the decent thing but anyone suggesting 'split the money with him' or 'finders keepers' is essentially suggesting theft as well.
If this staff member pocketed the cash, what sort of other shenaningans could they get up to? However, perhaps the store did allow staff to pop a note into their pocket before handing it in. In which case, reporting it to a manager would not be a problem and would avoid potential confrontation or accusations of theft. But it would be up to a manager to decide.
Good old M and S!!
I wore my Mum's sterling silver brooch for the first time and discovered that it was missing half way round shopping in Perth. I retraced my steps, asking in all the shops I'd been in and even asked the road sweeper - everyone helpful and asked me to leave my number with them.
Finally came to the conclusion that it had fallen off when I was running up the stairs in M and S and had either been knicked or had rolled under a fitting. I left my details with customer services and weeks later they phoned to say that a member of staff had found it.
I tried to get the manager to pass on £20 reward to the finder but was told it was against company policy but that, if I wished, I could donate it to their current charity. I was happy to do so although I asked that my profuse thanks were passed on to whoever found it. :rotfl:0 -
Hmm I don't know. It's wrong of the assistant obviously, and I'd be a bit annoyed that my own honesty had just funded someone else's dishonesty.
But I think for the sake of a tenner I'd probably not say anything. For all I know they automatically put it in their pocket for safe keeping whilst still intending to hand it in, or various other reasons I might not have thought of. I wouldn't like to deprive someone of their job over it (theft usually leads to instant dismissal) - even though they'd done wrong, I'd still feel guilty especially if I wasn't 100% sure they were stealing it.
In any case it's the shop's responsibility to keep an eye on their employees, not Ricky's, and indeed he should've handed it in to CS and asked for a receipt.
It'd be different if it was a big wad of cash or something, but for a small amount... it's sort of pointless fighting against small-time dishonesty. It's too widespread. Chances are his superior would just tell him to be more covert in future, take it off him in exchange for keeping his job and pocket it for himself. I'd just end up being seen as the @hole for grassing him up.
Oh dear....£10 IS a lot of money. It had to be earned by someone's labour. Who are you? Carnegie's wee brother?0 -
Carnewho? And who are you? Mr. Sarcasm?
Just being honest. I'm not sure how many here bother to do that, and instead see how high a horse they can get on...0 -

If you have a moral dilema over this phone the store and ask if the money had been handed in. If it had not, next time you are in mention it to the cashier in question giving them an opportunity to hand it in explaining you will check later that he had done so> As most staff these days have name badges it would be easy to check. £10 is £10, I handed a £20 note in at Harrods but the member of staff failed to hand it in.0

Honesty does pay better than thieving. I'da gone back and reported the nicking !!!!!!!. As all retail staff know, it's a no-no to have any money in your pockets at start of shift unless for a good reason and reported to your manager (who may tell you to wait for your break or if it's to get something, do it quickly and write down receipt stuff)
I am always eternally grateful to the person who found my purse and handed it in, considering it had the week's shopping money in it.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **

A purse is a different matter, but if I found loose money I'd keep it. Frankly it's never going to get back to it's original owner and I'd expect whoever I handed it to to keep it themselves. If I honestly thought it would get back to the original owner I'd do all I could but I can't see it happening in this situation. This situation is slightly different, as the owner is more likely to come looking for it, so I'd probably wait around for a bit and see if they turned up.
I've worked on a shop floor and on the tills and I was allowed to keep my own money in my pockets, and this was for a large electrical store. I don't think this rule is universal.0
