Should I buy new or nearly new?

I have been planning to replace my 04 clio with a newish diesel fiesta. I want my new fiesta to be reasonably new (08 plate or so) with very low milage - no more then 15k as I do alot of miles, ideally I would like a zetec too.

I have been looking about for used models and so far I'm finding very little of the old shape diesels with low milage. I did find a 08 style climate with only 7000 miles for 8k sticker price but I got quite a bad feeling about the car and have decided against it. Old shape fiestas which match my spec seem to be priced at about 8-8.5k Which got me thinking, should I spend a bit more and buy new? This is appealing to me as I'd get the new shape, get a car with no mileage and full warranty - the not so appealing part is the extra cost - I have been reading the fiesta zetec deals thread so I know some people are getting good deals but it would mean spending a few more thousand - which is money that I don't have but could borrow from family so at least I wouldn't have to get finance.

So my question is, is it worth the extra money? Any advice/opinions gratefully appreciated!

  • What was up with the style climate?
What features of the zetec do you want/need?

  • Well, nothing appeared to be wrong with it, it sounds silly written down but I just didn't get a good feeling about it and I know if I brought it I would always have a niggling doubt in the back of my mind which I don't want to have after spending all that money!

The edge/style has all the features I need (but if I brought new I would pay the extra £100 for automatic lights and wipers) but I just think the zetec is a nicer looking car so I want that one purely for vanity! It's not a must though - if I saw a good deal on a style/edge I would be happy to get that!

... I have been reading the fiesta zetec deals thread so I know some people are getting good deals...

Beware. Someone in that thread suggested you could pick up one retail brand new for £8k :rotfl:

Have a look for a pre registered model. Technically you will be the second name on the V5 but the Car will be brand new. There are some really big savings to be had on these and may feel worth it to you.

The only advantage in buying new as against "almost new" is snob value.

    That's not meant to offend.

Buy at about a year old or less. The original owner or garage will have taken the hit, had the waranty issues sorted hopefully, leaving you to profit.

    From personnal exp and as you mentioned the Clio;

We bought a 6 month old prereisterd diesel clio fro Direct cars in Sheffield. As sad, 6 months old, demo model, 198 miles on the clock..

How can you go wrong? The car still had 2.5 years waranty, cost 7 k instead of 11K????????

5 years later who cared when we traded it in if it had 1 or 2 previous owners:confused::confused:

    Good luck and take heed/care;)

Even when sometimes a new car is cheaper?

  • I was recently looking to buy a secondhand car but found there were very few cars available. This is apparently partly due to the hire car companies hanging onto their vehicles for as long as possible. Secondhand cars were only about £500 cheaper than a new one. I managed to haggle the price for my new car down by £2,200 by showing my local main agent dealer an offer I had found on another main agent dealer's website. I also got interest free credit and a good trade in on my own car.

Lot's of threads lately about pre-registered (therefore second hand) being more expensive than new.

In summer 2008 Ford selling off Zetec Fiesta stacks of extras for less than 8K. With 2nd hand ones on their forecourts for a similar and often higher price.
