Ex-directory means nothing, they'll have an auto-dialler that calls a wide number range, if yours is in this, you will get a call.

Neither does being TPS registered these days. The number of prosecutions last year by all accounts was 0. More and more companies have wised up to this. When I have pointed out to cold callers that I am TPS registered, more often than not the answer is along the lines of "so what?".

A friend has a suggestion on how to deal with these. When they call, tell them you have had an accident recently but are busy with a client, and can they call you back in, say, 20 minutes. Take the callers name and - importantly - the company they work for.

Get on google, find out where they are based and make a note of their office address (1471 can also help if not barred). When the vultures call back, tell them you slipped on a wet floor and suffered injury. When they ask where it was, give them the address of where their company is situated. See how quickly they close the call.

About a year and a half ago I underwent knee surgery for a torn ligament.
I had gone for an NHS checkup but I also checked with my health insurance about my coverage.

Conveniently one month after my enquiry I received a call from these guys from someone who was adamant that I'd had an accident.

It seems like medical insurance suppliers (and possible comparison sites) are selling our data on to companies like these.

Being TPS registered does help significantly as I did my landline a year ago and have not had a cold call since.

If you do recieve calls like that then tell them that under Section 11 of the Data Protection act you want them to suprress the use of your data for marketing purposes and will report them to the information commisioner if you recieve any further contact from them. Try and send it as a letter too if you find out the company names.

  • I have just now (02/02/2010) had such a call.
Description the same, Indian(?) accent, withheld number, "someone at your address was involved in a road traffic accident" and "we are not authorised to give out our telephone number".
It is actually true and I was the injured party, but I didn't want to let on and get involved in a long call. It is already in the hands of a real, trustworthy, firm of solicitors and any ambulance chasers can go sing :rotfl:
I am also wary as asides from anyone scamming/fishing, there could be other individuals who would like such info about me.

I havent had one of these calls yet??

However if i did i would state that yes i have had an accident, and if you wish for any details you will need to speak to my solicitor dealing with the claim.

You never know they may just hang up.

Suffolk Police have issued a warning about this bunch. http://www.suffolk.police.uk/News+And+Appeals/News/Bogus+Phone+Call+Warning.htm
  • Just had a call from "Sandy" saying he was based in Birmingham but there was a long delay on the phone. He told me that my GP or local hospital had given him the information about me. I told him this was in breach of patient confidentiality and Data protection. I asked for a phone number but was not given one he then told me his personal ID was SWJDW 147517. I thanked him and said I would seek legal advise as laws had been broken. He advised me the information he gave me was wrong and hung up.

Guys, many NHS details were "lost" by a politician, i thik they were on a laptop he was carrying and he "forgot" it, if this polotician sold that info to scammers for hundreds of thousands of £££'s you will keep getting calls from them.
    Owed out = lots.

How about next time they call and they state you have had an accident - say "have I? I'd best get down to the hospital then, bye!" :rotfl::rotfl:
