Does anyone know which cards - electron/prepaid etc work on bmi baby to avoid charges. I am wanting to book flights soon

Why don't you try making a test booking on their website and find out.

You don't have to proceed with the final payment screen but it will show you what their charges are for the various respective payment methods.

You could then report back to other members here on what you find.

Tried several debit cards and it rejected every one - thought that my basic lloyds account visa card might work but it didn't - had to make a booking and it cost me more in additional charges than the flight!

In my experience Easyjet, Thomson and FlyBe all still allow card free fee transactions for users of Visa Electron and only Ryanair has changed to Mastercard PrePaid for card fee free transactions. I find it surprising that these companies have not also added Mastercard Prepaid to their list of fee free cards so that they catch the same card fee allergic customers as Ryanair while showing that they are better than Ryanair by not withdrawing previously free fee cards.

I note that Monarch does not charge any extra for credit or debit cards but charges a £10 surcharge to pay via PayPal.

My own visit to the FlyBMI site suggests they do not charge a fee for any debit card but impose a £4.50 fee per passenger per booking for credit card use. If your debit cards were being rejected then I would have called FlyBMI on their ordinary rate 01332 648181 number listed at https://www.saynoto0870.com to find out why.

my booking was via bmibaby web site which charges extra for all debit cards £10 - even more for credit cards and apparently is free for visa electron.

I hope that bmibaby might adopt the prepaid mastercard solution like Ryanair

Except that Electron cards are a complete rarity- my bank lloyds stopped issuing them some months ago - at least with caxton fx prepaid card the use of a card in uk is 1.50 against £10 on bmi for use of debit card

Why? Electron cards linked to a bank account are free; prepaid mastercards have to be paid for somewhere along the way.

Well don't forget that booking a flight to the UK for instance with an Airline charging for it in Euro's can easily add a £1.50 or more fee to the cost of the flight using a Visa electron card, that's a lot on a 4.99 Euro flight.
Using say the Fairfx £ card would cost you 1.5% plus their conversion charge say another 1.5% so around 3% in total less than 15p.

You still avoid paying card fees with Easyjet, FlyBe and Thomson by using Visa Electron compared to an ordinary debit card.

And NorfolkLine Ferries. Ryanair will only accept prepaid Mastercards now without applying extortionate charges.
  • :(As Easyjet and probably others now have a colossal fee of £40+ for paying for flights/holidays using credit cards, does anyone know how to get a Visa Electron card now, this year- as the thread seems to have ended in 2006 and many banks no longer issues such cards- well they are struggling to make ends meet aren't they!
