Me too! Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly and I can cheaper flights :)
  • If you get an Electron card, though you save money on the charges is there the same level of insurance protection that using a credit-card gives you?

For saving a few pennies could possibly cost you much more if you had to make a claim with your credit card?

Also does using your debit-card entitle you to the same protection as using a credit-card gives you?

The protection you get by law only applies to credit cards (although I understand that it could be applied to a debit card transaction that takes you from a credit balance to overdrawn). It only applies to transactions over £100 IIRC.

However, Visa operates its own scheme (Visa chargeback) which offers a similar level of protection and does not have a minimum transaction amount.

Bear in mind that the protection you get is only really useful if the airline were to go bankrupt. And in the case of Ryanair, you're saving a lot more than "a few pennies".

That's just if you want to use one of the prepaid Visa Electron cards (TravelEx IIRC). A Halifax Visa Electron card is a proper debit card and is ideal for paying for flights on low-cost airlines.

It is an Electron card and as such Ryanair should not charge you the £5 booking fees.
Yes you do need sufficient funds in the account before you make the card transaction.

Hi just to let you know if you go to the Halifax and ask for a Visa Electron card they will set you up with an account and a card. Be aware that the process is not instant and will take approx. one week to complete. When you get your card simply deposit enough money in your account to cover any transaction and treat it as a pay-as-you go system. Essentially this is an acceptable card for purchasing online Ryanair tickets without incurring any booking charges.
